Here’s a muzzle conditioning pro tip: Try cutting the front of the muzzle out to make feeding super easy and fast! If you’ve ever tried to feed a dog in a muzzle, you know they might try to “help” by moving their mouth around, which often ends with treats falling, everyone getting frustrated, and a inevitable pawing at the muzzle.

One important part of muzzle conditioning is helping your dog get comfortable moving around, playing, and adventuring with the muzzle on. When you cut out the front, it makes it easier to let your pup sniff out a food scatter or enjoy treats on your walk, keeping things low-stress and enjoyable!

Just a quick note: This is for training only, as the muzzle becomes non-functional with the front removed. Always have a fully intact one for when your dog is fully conditioned and needs the added security. Happy training!

When it comes to kids and dogs, safety and education go hand in hand! Here’s how you can ensure both have positive experiences together:

🔹Always supervise their interactions. Even the sweetest dogs and kids can have misunderstandings. Watch for signs that your dog might be stressed or uncomfortable, and give your dog breaks when needed!

🔹Teach kids how to approach dogs calmly and gently. Remind them to always ask the owner before petting a dog and be cautious when interacting with dogs you don’t know. Make sure to teach your child to avoid hugging or putting their faces too close to a dog’s face. Dogs appreciate gentle pets on their back or sides, rather than their head or tail. Allow them to pet the dog for 3 seconds and then take a break to allow the dog to speak out more attention, or a break if needed.

🔹Set up safe zones where your dog can retreat to rest, and make sure kids know these are off-limits when the dog is resting. Using barriers like baby gates can also help keep everyone safe when you can’t keep a close eye on things.

🔹Dogs also need to learn how to behave around kids. Train your dog to stay calm and avoid jumping. Seek the help of a professional dog trainer to help your dog get used to different types of touch and loud noises, so they’re not easily startled.

🔸If your dog has shown fear or aggression towards children, avoid all interactions and seek the help of a professional!

Did you know that muzzle training isn’t just for “bad” dogs? In fact, it’s a valuable skill for all kinds of dogs!

Muzzles can be incredibly useful in a variety of situations. Of course the obvious: for dogs who might bite out of fear or aggression, muzzles provide a safe way to manage interactions.

They are also essential when a dog is in pain or injured and needs medical care, as even the sweetest dog might become defensive when hurt.

Muzzles can be a great tool for stressful vet visits, keeping both the dog and vet staff safe during exams!

In public, they can prevent well-meaning strangers from petting a dog who may want to be left alone.

Finally, they’re a lifesaver for dogs who love to eat things they shouldn’t.

Muzzle training is about safety and preparedness—it ensures our dogs are comfortable and calm when they need to wear one.

So, don’t wait for a stressful situation to train your dog to wear a muzzle. Start now, and make it a positive experience for both of you!

Want to have a smooth and stress-free trip to the store with your dog? A little planning can go a long way in making it a success!

🔹Remember to bring plenty of treats to reward good behavior
🔹Use a shorter leash than what you use in the neighborhood for better control
🔹Try to avoid peak hours to minimize distractions for the first few trips
🔹Choose stores with lots of space and good visibility to make the experience more comfortable for both of you.

Happy shopping with your pup!

Introducing a tiny new puppy to your larger, established dogs requires careful management and patience. Keep things safe by starting with crates, gates, and other physical barriers to create a safe space where everyone can get used to each other without direct contact.

Once they’re comfortable with the barriers, consider parallel leash walking. This allows them to focus on sniffing and exploring rather than directly interacting, which helps keep energy low while maintaining a positive experience.

If there’s no risk of resource guarding, reward calm behavior with treats and consider food scatters to create positive associations and provide a relaxed activity for them to share. The goal is to make every interaction positive and stress-free, ensuring a smooth transition for your new puppy into your household.

As always, when introducing any dogs together, watch their body language closely—if there are any signs of stress or aggression, consult a professional for guidance.

You may be confused at the title, since this puppy isn’t barking. What you may not realize, is that she’s not barking because of how this session was set up!!

I try not to wait for puppies and dogs to take things into their own… paws. I would much rather set the stage for them to be right and feel GOOD about being right.

In this video, puppy Sadie is getting treats every time she sees this strange dog. Instead of waiting for her to be wrong and punishing that wrong choice, I’m building very strong positive feelings towards the other dog by associating him with rewards.

In addition to that, I’m also marking and rewarding the moment she sees him but is quiet.

Lastly, we’re working at HER pace, at a distance she is comfortable with. If you take things too fast, you can accidentally take steps back in your training.

Shorty is getting used to walking on a harness so my job is to make it fun and easy for him!

I do my best to keep a loose leash for him while he is getting used to the feel - over the next couple walks we will start to introduce small amounts of leash pressure with treats so he starts to understand how to walk on leash!

We kept this walk VERY short. Ha ha. Short.

Shorty is 10 weeks old and still VERY much a baby, so he can’t handle long walks that adult dogs do. Instead, our focus is for him to feel confident with the sights and smells and even get used to pottying in this context also!

Shorty will be a walking companion for his owner so it’s important he feels very confident in this setting.

Good job Shorty!

Our dogs weren’t built for a life on leash in the suburbs, and this mismatch often leads to reactivity and stress during everyday walks for many dogs. While a solid training and management plan is crucial for addressing these issues, it’s equally important to give both our dogs and ourselves some time to decompress. We all need a break to unwind and just enjoy being together without the pressure of training.

So, what IS a decompression hike anyway?
Decompression hikes are off-leash or long-line adventures in low-pressure environments where dogs can explore at their own pace. These hikes are essential for helping dogs lower their stress hormone levels and just gives them time to act like dogs. When dogs encounter triggers, their cortisol spikes, and it can take days for these stress hormones to leave their system. High cortisol levels can affect both a dog’s mental and physical health, making it harder for them to stay calm and recover quickly after a stressful event.

This is where trigger stacking comes into play. When a dog is exposed to multiple triggers over time, especially when cortisol levels are still elevated, it becomes harder for them to stay under threshold. Each additional trigger stacks on top of the previous one, making it more likely for the dog to react.

Decompression hikes help break this cycle by allowing dogs to unwind, helping them return to a relaxed state and preventing the accumulation of stress.

So, let’s make time for decompression, giving our dogs the mental and emotional reset they deserve. It’s all about balance, not just for them but for us too!

Does having a dog who waits at doorways instead of rushing outside feel like a pipe dream? Does it seem like other dogs can do it, but yours just can’t get the hang of it?

Try this simple trick! Set up a food bowl on either side of the doorway and use them as feeding stations. With your dog on a leash, reward them with high-value treats for not pulling toward the door, or even better, for offering eye contact. Once they’re waiting patiently, allow them through the door and reward them at the bowl outside.

By teaching your dog to expect rewards around the doorway, the excitement of the outside world will become less of a temptation.

Want to up your walking game? Here’s a few simple ways to create big change for walking your dog.

1. Bring a TON of bite sized training treats and reward your dog for making good decisions like looking at you, not pulling, or leaving things alone when asked.

2. Reward at your side!! If rewards happen at your side ALWAYS, there is greater value in staying there instead of pulling ahead.

3. Avoid using very short leashes (4ft and under) as they make it much harder for a dog to stay on a loose leash. Too long of a leash may be difficult to manage, also. Instead, opt for a mid length leash around 6ft-10ft long!

Everyone dreams of having a “go anywhere, do anything” dog, but getting there takes planning and preparation! Jumping straight into public outings with your dog or puppy without a solid plan can set them up for failure. Without clear expectations and reinforcement strategies, your dog might find the environment more exciting than being with you, leading to behaviors like jumping, barking, and pulling. This can make outings stressful and less enjoyable for both of you.

For example, taking your dog to a patio might be fun for you, but it can be boring or frustrating for them, especially with all the distractions they can’t access.

Instead of winging it, come prepared! Start by practicing settling on a mat in low-distraction areas. Use high-value rewards like a Kong or bully stick to keep your dog occupied. Occasionally rewarding from your hand is fine, but don’t do it too frequently as it can lead to excitement and frustration behaviors, like demand barking. Instead, casually drop treats into the mat they’re lying on, so that the rewards are associated with staying low to the ground rather than fixating up towards you.

Keep training sessions short and enjoyable, gradually building up to longer outings where you can relax and have fun together.
