If you guessed Bearded dragon to the challenge- you are correct!

❓Did you recognize the “beard?”
Native to Australia, bearded dragons are named for their spiky “beards” which are actually expandable throat pouches.

💥 When threatened or displaying, the bearded dragon will expand its throat pouch. The scales will darken to a gray or black shade, appearing like a beard. They will also stand taller and puff out to look more intimidating.

👁️ Bearded dragons have a pineal, or third, eye found on the top of their heads, which looks like a tiny, round, opaque scale. This gland helps regulate the amount of time the lizard spends in the sun by secreting hormones.

👋 Bearded dragons can wave! Smaller less dominant bearded dragons will stand on three legs and wave one of their front legs in a circular motion. Scientists believe that this is a signal of submission around larger dragons. Other forms of communication involve head bobbing, puffing out their bodies and licking.

Check out our bearded dragons and all the other amazing animals on your next visit to Rainforest Adventures!

If you guessed Marmoset or Common Marmoset to the challenge- you are correct!

🧈 Common marmosets are extremely small monkeys weighing only about as much as a stick of butter.

🍤 Native to the rainforests in Brazil, their name comes from the French word “marmouset” which translates to “dwarf” or “shrimp”

🌳 Marmosets have chisel-shaped incisors to gnaw holes in the bark of trees to scoop out sap. Tree sap is a valuable source of carbohydrates and minerals for their diet in the wild.

👯‍♂️ Marmosets are the among the only monkeys that regularly give birth to twins!

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒They live in family groups, called troops that typically have a breeding pair, their babies, and any of their adult children. The twin infants are raised by the entire troop, including Dad, aunts, uncles and older siblings in a practice known as ‘collective rearing’.

🔎Check out our rambunctious troop of Common marmosets on your next visit to Rainforest Adventures.

If you guessed Tarantula or Chilean rose hair tarantula to the challenge- you are correct!

🌹 Did you recognize the hair? Just like the name suggests, this spider is native to Chile, Argentina and Bolivia and has a dark body with signature rosy-pink hued hair.

🌙 Tarantulas are night hunters and rely on fangs that fold under their body to strike downwards to impale their prey.

🕷️🕸️ Look closely at the tiny hair-like structures (called urticating bristles) they can use as a defense. When threatened the tarantula can use its legs to flick the bristles onto a predator, causing an irritating, itchy reaction. Pretty cool!

Check out, Rose, our gorgeous Chilean rose hair tarantula and all of the other varieties of tarantulas on your next visit to Rainforest Adventures.

If you guessed Agouti or Red Rumped agouti to the Wild Wednesday challenge- you are correct!

🍑 Agouti Booty-Did you recognize the orange/red rump? Their scientific name “Dasyprocta” means “fuzzy butt.”

🦷 Red-rumped agoutis are part of the rodent family and look to some like big guinea pigs with longer legs. Their incisor teeth grow constantly their whole lives!

🌰 🌳 Found in the rainforests of South America, they are the only mammals in their native ranges that can open the shell of a Brazil nut, which makes them really important to the ecosystem. Some species of trees depend entirely on agoutis for seed dispersal.

Check out the beautiful red-rumped agoutis, Binx and Blair on your next visit to Rainforest Adventures.

Happy World Lemur Day!

‼️Did you know....Lemurs are one of the most endangered groups of mammals with 98% of the 112 species threatened with extinction, and 31% listed as critically endangered by the IUCN red list.

🌍 This is in large part due to their small natural habitat, just the island of Madagascar, located off the coast of Africa. Rampant deforestation, hunting and slash and burn agriculture are the biggest threats to wild lemur populations today.

Today we celebrate and reflect on the importance of protecting lemur populations both in the wild and in managed care networks like zoos and aquariums.
