Ranger, our newest board and train client, is an 8month old retriever who will be with us for the next 5-6 weeks. This boy is starting off at a great age and you know we HAVE to begin with marker loading. Here is our first marker/clicker loading session.
You all remember that boy who was afraid of the place cot?! Look at him now!
The Name Game
Let’s play “The Name Game”.
The name game is such a simple yet extremely powerful game to play with your dog.
Think about it, how often do you use your dogs name in a negative context and compare that with how often you use it in a positive context. Most of the time it’s the first one.
But, what word are you going to use in a stressful situation when you lose the leash, the dog bolts out the door or through the gate, or maybe comes out of the vehicle to fast? You’re going to use the dogs name in that stressful moment.
So we are simply creating a positive association to the dogs name. So they know, when they hear that, they have a guarantee of getting something of high value.
Give this a shot, give me 5 minutes a day for at least the next 5-7 days and I almost promise you’ll begin to see a change in response to the dogs own name.
This is the response we want from the clicker or any other marker. The “slam the breaks and get THE F back to the reward source” kind of response.
Lazy Dog Training
Lazy Sunday dog training. We are marker loading with Max. Max is not food motivated for his own kibble and to make matters better he is afraid of his own shadow and every noise…ever. So we need to take things slow with him. I am sitting on the couch watching the Eagles destroy the Cowboys and dog training at the same time. It can be that simple
Raw and Real Training
This is a longer video and I don’t have any instructional part to it. It is what a raw and real training session looks like from start to finish.
It’s not pretty, mistakes are made (by me), but most importantly learning occurs and by the end of the video progress has been made.
This is what training looks like. A lot of what we post is little 1-2 minutes clips that we cut out of longer videos to show the progress, but I believe you need to see what achieving that progress really looks like.

The Name Game
Developing a positive association to your dogs name is one way to begin solidifying a solid recall. We play the name game with all of your dogs. The goal behind the name game is to create a classically conditioned response to sound of the name.
Now, it is imperative that when beginning this we only use the dog’s name in a positive context. This is harder than it sounds since when our dogs are in to something we don’t like we naturally revert to saying their names.

Loose leash 101
Do you dream of being able to walk with your dog as a team and not your dog believing it’s the Indy 500 pulling you all throughout the neighborhood?
It all starts with the small stuff. In this video I break down a very simple way to begin achieving the desired loose leash walk that so many owners are struggling with.
Buck is the poster child for pulling on a leash. Oppositional reflex is your dogs natural instinct to fight against or pull against pressure. If you have a strong puller than you experience this every time you try to go for a walk.
One way we can help remove that oppositional reflex is to condition a different response to that pressure. This is one of the methods we will add in to our training to help achieve a nice loose leash walk.
