🎆🐾 Help your dog stay calm during fireworks with this tip! 🧬

📺 🎶 Mask the outside sounds by turning up the volume on the TV, playing soothing music, or running white noise like fans.

✅ By drowning out or making the loud booms less noticeable, you can reduce the stress your dog feels during fireworks displays.

Let's make this holiday fear-free for our furry companions! ❤️🐶

Helpful tip for dogs that seem to listen only when they see food.

This will help your dog listen to you even when they don't see the food in your hand

If your dog is a "show me the money" type of dog, you'll want to start asking for easy behaviors without your dog knowing you have a reward. Start off with saying your dog's name or asking for eye contact. You'll then pull the treat out of your pocket. This will result in your dog starting to listen more without you having to show them the money first.

This is great

1.....2...3...Separate.
If you watch dogs you will see this can be a normal pattern of behaviour that many dogs display when they naturally encounter others and we can mimic this.
You may have even experienced meetings which suddenly turned about 5 seconds after they met, one dog suddenly got snappy. They may have hung around too long and social cues may have been ignored.
The 3 second "rule" is a good way to help dogs that struggle with reading other dogs.
However, this is NOT for dogs that are hyper excited and are "digging" in to meet others....this likely won't help.
🔵If you have a puppy/dog that is calmer and perhaps unsure, this can help.
🔵Choose your dogs wisely for this and watch the body language of BOTH dogs.
🔵Just because 3 seconds is mentioned....if you see an issue before 3 seconds, advocate and remove your dog.
🔵You can do this on a lead BUT remove the tension on the lead, Tension creates tension.
🔵You can repeat this if signals are good after the first meeting. Some dogs will need 4 - 5 micro meetings over a few minutes to be comfortable.
🔵Don't even attempt if either dog is giving a very clear "No"
🔵Dogs do NOT need to meet every other dog they encounter and encouraging that can be dangerous as you know nothing about the other dog....be choosy with this.
✅If your dog doesn't want to engage with any dog, that is just fine. Every dogs sociability is fluid and many do not enjoy the company of other dogs, and even when they do, they can be very choosy.
If you haven't tried this give this a go.... with a well thought out calmer dog to help your puppy or dog that may be struggling.

He has a fear of cars and riding in them for several years now.

Ok let's see if I can help him feel better about cars.

Session 1. He takes food near an open car door twice but not comfortable. We go for a walk.
Session 2. Puts front paws on the seat to take food several times, we go for a walk.
Session 3. He reaches his whole body into the car for food, keeps back feet outside. Repeated 3 times and went for a walk.
Session 4. he jumps in and we move the car and then go for a walk.

Each session is under 1 minute and many days between them. All walks are relaxing go-for-a-sniff walks.

Excellent information

A very simple solution to many issues is to prevent them doing that behaviour again and again..... and show your dog an alternative behaviour.
If you don't teach them an alternative behaviour.....temptation may be just too much, especially if they have been "rewarded" by the unwanted behaviour.

Food is a big reward for a dog.
Take counter/bench surfing, grabbing that food on the bench is rewarding..... but there are many other types of rewards.
We may not even recognise that the unwanted behaviour your dog is showing has been rewarded....simply because you cannot see any food involved......
Food does not need to be present for your dog to be rewarded.

If your dog struggles with recall around other dogs and they wander off to investigate those dogs far away.....then they play....they have been rewarded and that action is likely to be repeated.

Preventing those moments being repeated is VERY important.

Why wouldn't they do that behaviour again ?
It worked for them....they ran away, played with a dog, it was fun....so chances are it will happen again.

Prevent those behaviours being reinforced again.
Manage situations carefully so they cannot be repeated and rewarded.

If you want a different behaviour, train an alternative behaviour.....sometimes it really is as simple as that.

How to fade out using treats.

How to fade out using treats.

Please don’t wean cold Turkey. Always carry treat rewards while in training. Even when your dog has learned something and is pretty solid, and they are still maturing, carry treats. Once mature, most are good w verbal praise as a reward. Maturity happens when they are 2-3 years old. Rewarding during adolescence is critical for a well mannered adult dog. Adolescence is when most people relinquish their dogs to the shelter. Don’t wean too soon. Puppies and adolescents need a lot of reinforcement.

Imagine you are walking with a friend. You think you hear a person walking behind you and turn your head to make sure everything is okay. But your friend won’t let you! They keep telling you to ignore the person, to focus on them and if you try to look anyway, they become angry.

Are you less scared of the person? Or is the person maybe even more scary because you don’t have the opportunity to check them out? Might the person be an even bigger deal now than they were before?

While we do want to help our dogs move past triggers and prevent them from staring when over threshold, if it’s safe to do so (both physically and for their training progress), I always encourage observation. I need to check out the things that scare me - so why would I expect my dogs to ignore them?

It’s not up to us to decide that something isn’t a big deal for our dogs, it’s up to them. Let them come to this realization and quit standing in the way!

Our Story

I believe that through the proper use of positive rewards-based training the possibilities of things we can train our pets to do is limited only by our imagination. I have been a devoted animal lover my entire life. I use humane training methods based on proven science. These methods yield quick learning without the negative side effects often caused by harsher methods. I use rewards such as food, toys, praise and real life pleasures for your dog. I study behavior and training on an ongoing basis through seminars, workshops, certification courses, mentor-ships, books, articles, case studies, videos, professional affiliated educational offerings, and hands on experience. I work to make a positive difference in the lives of our best friends. I will never use equipment designed to hurt, suppress or frighten any animal in order to train them. There is always a kinder safer way to easily achieve training goals.
