We know this little stinker has touched the hearts of so many. We are sad to share that Cheeka has said goodbye after being at Barberry Farm for 23 years. Anyone who came to visit or has been a part of Barberry knew her little knicker and spitfire personality. She was so happy for visitors and sweet to everyone she met! Cheeka was born in Evans City, bred by Bertie and Don Walker ( Jamison)They named her “Peaches and Cream” on April 27, 1998. She came to Barberry in 1999, love at first sight, stood 29” tall but acted like the biggest horse on the farm. We named her Cheeka and she has been our family ever since. She has walked through the dog park and all over the trails of the Sewickley Heights park, marched in a Sewickley parade dressed as a cop (with her jailhouse dog friends) and countless excursions when not letting us catch her around the farm! She had lots of horse friends but fell in love with Ivanho. They were the biggest and the smallest horses on the farm and it was an amazing relationship to watch. She made sure she was the boss!
The past year Cheeka struggled with a stifle injury and metabolic issues. Amulet Equine Rehab and Conditioning Center was a wonderful retreat for Cheeka. She was treated like royalty among racehorses and other athletes towering over her short little legs! But, she was the only horse to be allowed inside their office with air conditioning and to steal the hearts of everyone there! She truly felt like a champion and we love Amulet for giving her that special feeling. We tried everything over the years to solve Cheeka issues but without Allegheny Equine Associates we would have never made it this long! Their constant guidance and monitoring, ideas and expertise was above and beyond the best care possible for our special girl!

We apologize for any sorrow this brings but thank you for sharing love with her.

2 1/2 months has gone by quickly, Venakki does big boy horse things now!

Venakki is 2 1/2 months! That little nose is the cutest thing ever. Starting to shed the baby coat!

Thank you for the great turnout and an awesome job by Allegheny Equine Associates! Our Equine Wellness event was so much fun! We had a weight guessing game with a scale, live dental exam where you could feel inside a horses mouth, eye examination and so many great facts from working to health management!! Can’t wait for the next one, stay tuned…

We would like to thank our 2021-2022 intern Dr. Adria Schlesman. She has been working hard and learning a great deal over the last year. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.
Dr. Schlesman will be staying at Allegheny Equine! She joined our team as an associate veterinarian.

Dr. Adria Schlesman joined Allegheny Equine in May 2021. She was born and raised in Westmoreland County where she grew up riding and showing Quarter horses through 4-H and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA). In 2017, Dr. Schlesman received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from The University of Pittsburgh where she was a member of the University of Pittsburgh Equestrian Team. While earning her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and a certificate in Veterinary Business from the University of Pennsylvania in 2021, Dr. Schlesman spent the majority of her training at their large animal hospital, New Bolton Center. Dr. Schlesman’s professional interests include internal medicine, preventative medicine, and emergency/critical care. In her free time, Dr. Schlesman enjoys riding her horse, Zandy; visiting her two Shetland ponies, Linnaeus and Maurice; running, and spending time with her husband, family, and friends.

His mom Varzea (means meadow in Portuguese) and dad, , 6666 Ranch!
Venakki is Portuguese whiskey but around the barn we will nickname him “gnocchi”
We want to thank Allegheny Equine Associates for a great delivery and wonderful care! 🥰 We are excited to have this little bu**er home at Barberry!!
