End your training day and get your Saturday evening started at the Misty Pines Family Friendly Happy Hour this Saturday, May 18th from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Lynda Manko, Executive Director of Animal Lifeline Pittsburgh Animal Lifeline shelter, will be here with her staff and dogs looking for homes and accepting donations for their organization.
Jeff Karwoski, of Reforest Our Future, will be here with his dog Forest. Jeff and Forest trained at Misty Pines and received their Therapy Dog certification. Reforest Our Future brings Forest Tales to life at Beaver County schools with visits by Forest himself. Elementary students are able to interact with the dog by reading the Forest Tales story to him and enjoying some playtime. Jeff is a great resource for information about trees and conservation as well as literacy programs.
Another great hangout for you and your dog is our local Sewickley Brewery. Founders and Brewmaster Marc, Gina, Chris and Charlene, are great supporters of dogs and dog friendly environments. Go hang out with your dog at this wonderful, new pub and brewery at Big Sewickley Creek Brewery.
Wine and beer will be provided for adults, juice boxes and sodas will be provided for kids and those under 21, and water will be provided for the dogs! Hot dogs and light snacks will be provided for everyone as well. Come relax with your canine companion and enjoy the outdoor park, the indoor agility obstacles, or a walk on the trails. Dog training, health and diet, behavior problem questions and insight will also be available during Happy Hour. Samples of Dr. Gary's Best Breed Dog Food and Instinct Raw Dog Food will be available and given out.

On Wednesday, March 13th, Misty Pines hosted a teaching opportunity for a local business called Fetch! Pet Care, owner, Ms. Jacqueline Peters and her Pet Care staff of dog walkers and pet sitters for an evening of discussions and learning. Jeff, director of training, delivered an informative discussion and demonstrations regarding concepts and principles for training a dog for the exercise of walking. We also discussed creative ways to help dogs not only to exercise their bodies but also how to exercise their minds. The staff from Fetch! had a many good questions throughout the evening and were very attentive as Jeff offered them information and insight to their questions.

We enjoyed the discussions with you and hope we gave you thought provoking concepts as well as insight about our favorite subject…Dogs!... and how they think.

Congratulations to our newest Canine Good Citizens. All nine testers passed their CGC test on February 3rd showing their great temperament and basic obedience skills. Great job to all of you! 👏

Congratulations to Veteran David Hoover and his 2.5 yr old chocolate lab, Webster for successfully completing the One Mile, One Hour Down Stay! Webster is David's 3rd Service Dog trained at Misty Pines and his 3rd service dog that he trained to this very challenging behavior.

To achieve this feat, David placed Webster in a Down-Stay in the training arena during a class session. Webster remained there for one hour while David, and his wife, Jane, went to lunch one mile away while Webster remained on his down-stay through many class distractions. Webster was stoic and stayed in position until David returned an hour later, stood by Webster's side and released him from his down-stay by telling him to Take-a-break and then they played. Good boy, Webster!

David is a huge Steelers fan and all three of his Service Dogs are on the "Stay Club" plaque in our training arena and have been named after members of the Steelers organization: Lambert (Jack Lambert, Linebacker during the Iron Curtain era), Noll (Chuck Noll, iconic head coach from 1969-1991) and Webster (Iron Mike Webster, Center during the Iron Curtain era). All three players have been inducted into the Football Hall of Fame.

David himself is worthy of a Hall of Fame as well: Not only is he a decorated United States Marine and Vietnam Veteran, he is also a very dedicated dog trainer. Though we have other Service Dogs certified at Misty Pines, no one has had three! And certainly no one has three dogs inducted into the Stay Club!

Thank you David for all of your hard work and dedication, you are certainly an inspiration to us all!

Thanks for liking our Lab Day post, hope you’re both doing well.
We had a great Level 1 orientation this past Wednesday and are looking forward to working with all the new students. We also had a really good tryout for our Advanced Off-Leash Companion Dog Class, which is part of our Winter Training Program. Looking forward to helping these dogs and handlers to reach higher levels of communication.

Microchipping your pet will give yourself peace of mind, now only $17.50! This includes your lifetime registration and enrollment into the BuddyID database, which is the official national network for all microchips. Please call 412.364.4122 to schedule an appointment. If your dog is already chipped, we can also scan your dog to check their ID number. There are wonderful stories of dogs found and returned home because of their microchip! Don't leave home without it!

To start the new year off on the right paw we are giving you a complimentary exercise class and daycare for you and your dog. Class will begin with a warm-up routine. Class will incorporate various exercises and behaviors with or without your dog. Complimentary daycare is available for your dog so you can focus on your individual workout. Exercises will include stationary behaviors as well as movement exercises, including body-weight, cardio and yoga poses for both you and your dog, if they are participating in class. Your instructor will show exercises with modifications to be more or less challenging so everyone of every fitness level can participate. This is a unique, extraordinary fun class taught by Aimee Kollinger, Certified Yoga Instructor/Health Coach, and a Misty Pines Dog Trainer.

You can take the this Exercise and Dog Training class with or without your dog. There will be a complimentary daycare service available for your dog during this class from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Congratulations to all our Labrador Retrievers who visited us with their human companions Saturday to celebrate National Labrador Retriever Day. We all had fun running the agility obstacle course, having interviews with the human companions about all the jobs, careers and successes of each member of this remarkable breed.

There was Jordan Fashion’s, Farkas, a retired bomb sniffing dog who served in Iraq and his 1 ½ year old brothers, Maverick and Bensen, who are current students of Misty Pines and learning various tricks.

There was Mike Swierkowski’s 9 mo old lab/pyr mix adopted July 4th from Cross Your Paws rescue. Mike’s wife is a veterinarian at Belacoop Animal Hospital in beautiful North Park. They are very interested in starting training classes at Misty Pines.

Mr. David Hoover, Vietnam Veteran, who served in Vietnam for 3 tours, has the privilege of having Noll and Webster (Steeler’s Alumni), who are 2 of his service dogs, dock diving competitors and then some!

Rhea Marinstein with Maggie, a 9 yr old Misty Pines Advance dog who can almost do anything! Maggie’s perfect Sunday would be filled with bully rubs, swimming and teeth brushing!

Derrick and Miranda Davidson with Remi 5, yr old and Luna 6 mo old and Penny grt/lab mix from Texas abandoned and found in an apartment bathtub. Luna is from the Northern Dog Project in Canada and was found and rescued from the streets. She is getting used to living indoors and learning better manners. Derrick and Miranda love travelling with their dogs. The dogs’ favorite part of vacations are hotel beds. They are interested in potential Therapy Dog work.

Victoria Lancaster, with Rybeck, 1/ ½ yr old, comes from a long line of scent detection dogs and is a Misty Pines class alumni. They are interested in starting Scent Work classes to develop those specialized, inherent skills.

Mike, a high school teacher, and Meadow came with W***y, 1 ½ yr old, and are wanting to teach W***y to become a Therapy Dog to work with Mike’s students.

Thank you All for attending our National Labrador Retriever Day gathering! It was great to honor you and your dogs for all the magnificent jobs that labs do for you and mankind.
