Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary

Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary My name is Karen Phillips, and I’m the founder of Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary. Each one of us has the power to make a difference.

Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary is a nonprofit animal sanctuary and rescue near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that gives neglected and abused farm animals a safe, loving and lifelong home. 🐴🦙🐷🐐🐓🦃🐶🐈 Over 10 years ago now, I was working as a veterinarian at a busy animal shelter when a potbelly piglet was brought in as a stray. It broke my heart to see this innocent little animal, Isaac, who had been abandone

d by his owner and then “saved” at a shelter, now tremble and cower in the back of a cement stall, while an aggressive dog barked in the adjacent kennel. That was the day I committed myself to the goal of starting and running a farm animal sanctuary: a place where neglected and unwanted farm animals could feel safe and loved. Now, a decade later, Hope Haven does exactly that, providing a safe and loving forever home to a wide range of farm animals — from pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys to horses, mini-donkeys, alpacas, emus and peacocks. (It’s definitely a lively crew!)

Creating and running this sanctuary has been the most difficult and most rewarding adventure of my life. It’s also taught me an invaluable lesson: that each of us has the power to create positivity and good in the world if we choose to do so. From the personal choices we make to the causes we support, each one of us has the ability to make life better for the farm animals that share our planet. If you feel moved to contribute to our work here at Hope Haven, we would be most grateful for your support. “Why is there so much snow on that poor emu?”❄️

You might think that when you see snow collecting on an animal’s back, it means they must be freezing—but that’s not always the case!

In fact, snow collecting on an animal can be a sign that they’re staying warm! WHAT?!

Here’s why: animals that live outside have thick feathers or fur that trap heat close to their bodies. If they’re warm enough inside, the snow won’t melt—it just sits on top because their body heat isn’t escaping. Think of it like a built-in insulation system!

Sparrow, one of our awesome emu, is perfectly cozy even with a snowy blanket on her back and cap on her head!

Pretty “cool”, right?
Stay warm everyone!

Our big Tom turkeys came out to saunter through the woods yesterday, strutting their stuff and enjoying a little winter fresh air. But with the cold and snow, we quickly ushered them back to their cozy pen to keep those feet warm!

Large factory-farmed breeds like our broad-breasted white turkeys and Cornish chickens have a hard time regulating their body temperature in extreme weather, so they can’t stay out for long.

We love our boys too much to risk frostbitten toes! Keeping them safe and warm is always our top priority.

Stay cozy out there, friends!

On cold, wintery days like this, nothing warms the heart quite like a good old-fashioned hog pile! 🐷🐐

In this adorable moment, Bradford and Benson, our lovable Kune Kune pigs, are cozying up with Norman the potbelly pig and Kevin, the best Boer goat, is right in back. But the star of the show? Smack dab in the middle of this cuddle puddle is our elusive feral cat, Hamster! 🐈‍⬛

Hamster rarely lets herself be seen by humans, but she’s a big fan of our animals—especially Kevin. We often spot her rubbing affectionately around his legs as he browses the farm. Now we know she’s also a fan of warm snuggles with her BFF and the whole gang!

This is the kind of magic we love at Hope Haven. Stay warm out there, friends! ❄️

Good morning from Pinky, our Great Pyrenees pup, who somehow thinks this frigid, bone-chilling start to winter is the best thing ever! ❄️

While the rest of us freeze in silent misery, Pinky and Richard are living their best life—bouncing through the frost and greeting us at the gate with that adorable, fluffy enthusiasm.

We may not share their love for the cold, but Pinky’s sweet face sure makes these icy mornings a little more bearable.

Hang in there, friends—we’ll get through this winter together, one frosty day at a time! 💪🐾

No matter how cold it gets here at the farm, our three Corriedale sheep always make us smile! We took these little lambs in last spring, after a group of sanctuaries were able to save them from slaughter. At that time they were too young to be sheared with the rest of our flock. We worried about how they’d handle the summer heat. But now - WOW - they’re absolutely thriving in this chilly winter weather!

They’re the best of friends, always frolicking, bucking, and dashing around their pasture. We especially love how they race to the fence when we pull through the front gates, greeting us with their deep, baritone ‘baas’—a sound so hilariously out of place coming from their sweet, woolly faces. These kiddos brighten up even the coldest day!

Nutmeg, one of our adorable bantam hens, came inside for a little spa day, and we caught the whole thing on video! 🛁✨ Get ready for some serious cuteness as she enjoys her pampering. .

As 2024 Comes to a Close...

What an amazing year it has been at Hope Haven! This year has been filled with incredible growth, new challenges, and so much gratitude. From welcoming countless new animals into our care to opening our gates for so many of you during tours and events, every moment has reminded us of the magic that happens when compassion brings people and animals together.

One of the most inspiring parts of 2024 has been getting to know the fantastic individuals who have joined our volunteer program. Your dedication, hard work, and kindness have truly been the heartbeat of our sanctuary, and we are endlessly grateful for each and every one of you.

As we look toward 2025, we’re stepping into exciting new plans and changes that are both thrilling and a little scary. But we move forward with confidence, knowing that we are surrounded by all of your unwavering support. You hold us up, inspire us, and remind us why this mission of compassion and advocacy is such a privilege and honor.

Thank you for taking this journey with us. We can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish together in the year ahead. Oh, the best is yet to come.

Huge hugs,
Karen and the Hope Haven Family

Our stunning Ayam Cemani roosters got to spend yesterday afternoon exploring their beautiful new coop —and they seemed to LOVE it! 🏡💛

The coop isn’t 100% finished yet, but with this little weather warm up, we thought they’d enjoy checking out their new digs. For now, they’re still staying indoors to keep them safe and cozy while we finish up the final touches.

Aren’t they absolutely gorgeous?! 😍 This rare Indonesian breed of chicken has all black feathers, skin, and internal organs due to a dominant gene called fibromelanosis. So cool!

While most of us are still basking in the joy and relaxation of a beautiful Christmas spent with friends and family, these four faces have a slightly different post-holiday agenda! 😅

Our Haven horses are a bit perturbed today as they impatiently await their farrier visit to have their hooves trimmed. 🐴💅 All the yuletide fun must come to an end, but they’ll be ready to tiptoe (quite literally!) into the New Year’s celebrations next week with perfectly polished hooves! ✨

Merry MESSmas!! Hope you’re day was less messy than the mudfest at the farm!! 😂
