My name is Karen Phillips, and I’m the founder of Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary. Each one of us has the power to make a difference.

Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary is a nonprofit animal sanctuary and rescue near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that gives neglected and abused farm animals a safe, loving and lifelong home. 🐴🦙🐷🐐🐓🦃🐶🐈 Over 10 years ago now, I was working as a veterinarian at a busy animal shelter when a potbelly piglet was brought in as a stray. It broke my heart to see this innocent little animal, Isaac, who had been abandone

d by his owner and then “saved” at a shelter, now tremble and cower in the back of a cement stall, while an aggressive dog barked in the adjacent kennel. That was the day I committed myself to the goal of starting and running a farm animal sanctuary: a place where neglected and unwanted farm animals could feel safe and loved. Now, a decade later, Hope Haven does exactly that, providing a safe and loving forever home to a wide range of farm animals — from pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys to horses, mini-donkeys, alpacas, emus and peacocks. (It’s definitely a lively crew!)

Creating and running this sanctuary has been the most difficult and most rewarding adventure of my life. It’s also taught me an invaluable lesson: that each of us has the power to create positivity and good in the world if we choose to do so. From the personal choices we make to the causes we support, each one of us has the ability to make life better for the farm animals that share our planet. Who Loves the Snow, and Who Doesn’t?

Farm Dogs: Our Great Pyrenees are in their element! Their thick, fluffy coats keep them warm, and they love the snow. Whether patrolling the farm or lounging, they’re right at home in the winter weather.

Goats: On the other hand, our goats really dislike wet weather. While they can handle the cold, they can’t stand being damp. Their fur isn’t thick enough to keep them dry, and staying wet too long can lead to health problems. They prefer to stay warm and dry, huddling together when it gets too wet!

A Dog With a Purpose 🎖️

There’s something truly beautiful about seeing a dog living the life they were meant to live. Dogs aren’t meant to be bored, lonely, or idle—they thrive when they have a job, a purpose, and a role to fill.

This is Richard, our Great Pyrenees guardian, standing watch as a flock of wild turkeys passes through the pig pasture. He’s not chasing them, barking wildly, or running in circles. He’s doing exactly what he was born to do—calmly observing, protecting, and ensuring everything is as it should be.

A working dog with a purpose is a dog that is confident, balanced, and fulfilled. It’s a reminder that every animal, including us, finds joy in meaningful work. Watching Richard in his element is a perfect example of that.

Our sweet Polly Penny Pants, one of our older sheep, has been feeling a bit sore and stiff lately. The cold snap we had in January seemed to take a toll on her arthritis, and she hasn’t been too eager to get up and move around much. But today, we were so excited to see her up and about, enjoying some afternoon snacks!

Just like us, animals feel the aches and pains of aging—especially in the winter. That’s why we make sure our older residents have thick, cozy beds of straw to keep them comfortable and warm during the colder months. Seeing Polly feeling a little better today was a bright spot in our day!

Send some love to Polly Penny Pants as she keeps resting and healing. We’ll make sure she gets all the extra care (and snacks!) she needs. ❤️🐑

Big Thanks to Our Amazing Volunteers!

This winter has been brutal—the extreme cold drained the batteries in our tractor and 4x4, making stall cleaning nearly impossible. Layers of ice turned our driveway into a skating rink, leaving us struggling for weeks. But yesterday, our incredible volunteers came to the rescue!

A HUGE thank you to Meg, Dawn, Lisa, and Alexis for their hard work and dedication in helping us dig out, clean up, and get the sanctuary back on its feet. We couldn’t do this without you!

Your kindness and effort mean the world to us—and to the animals who now have fresh, cozy spaces to enjoy. ❤️

It’s February!!! The warmer temps and rainy last few days have our alpacas rocking their soggy, windswept look! They don’t mind a little drizzle—just one step closer to spring and greener pastures ahead. 🌿🌧

Meet The Dapperest of Young Gentlemen! ✨🐓

Hope Haven has recently welcomed some extremely handsome roosters, including this gorgeous bantam boy with a stunning rose comb adorning his tiny head! 😍

Did you know that roosters can have nine different types of combs? Each one is unique and helps regulate their body temperature.

Here are the nine comb types found in chickens: 🔹 Single – The classic upright comb with evenly spaced points. 🔹 Rose – Flat, low, and covered in textured bumps, ending in a small spike. 🔹 Pea – Small and compact with three ridges running front to back. 🔹 Walnut – Large, rounded, and brain-like (a mix of rose and pea comb genes). 🔹 Cushion – Short, wide, and smooth with no points. 🔹 Buttercup – A cup-shaped comb with a circle of points around the edges. 🔹 V-Shaped – Two distinct horn-like points (sometimes called “devil horns”!). 🔹 Strawberry – Small and bumpy, sitting low on the head like a strawberry. 🔹 Carnation – A variation of the single comb, with extra points toward the back.

The Truth About Early Morning Chores… It’s 5 AM. It’s dark. It’s raining. You’re just trying to make it up the driveway to start the day when slowly… the headlights reveal them. Two emus. Reno and Falcon. Standing side by side. Completely still. Staring. Why??? Are they waiting for breakfast? Plotting something? Possessed? Simply existing in their eerie, prehistoric way? No one knows. Happy Thursday Thursdays we get produce donations from Costco making it the animals’ most favorite day of the week! The fruits and veggies not only are amazingly healthy for all our animals, but they provide diversity and deliciousness to their menu. A few weeks ago, Rigby was showing off his favorite magic trick with some donated strawberries (grapes and strawberries are his favorites)! Abracadabra! 💫
