Does your puppy bite and throw paws at the brush? 💢🐾 Here are some tips to help desensitize them to the feeling and make it a positive experience.
1. Make sure you’re using the proper brush and are not trying to brush over matting. In the video, Rick has some matting that you can see and I’m careful not to brush those sections. They will be cut later. If your puppy has matting already, skip those sections and let your groomer safely cut it out. Brushing over matting is uncomfortable and can hurt a sensitive puppy, and it will teach them that brushing is an unpleasant experience.
2. At first, focus less on actual brushing and more on touching the brush to their body. Try not to pull away, and find that very small moment they stop and mark it with a YES! and a high-value treat.
3. This puppy is SUPER consistent, so in order for him to become used to it, I have to be more consistent than he is. It takes a lot of patience, so if you get frustrated, wait for a moment of calm before giving you and your puppy a break.
4. This technique can work for small puppies, but older dogs with adult teeth could do some damage so always use your discretion and consult your professional groomer for tips on your specific dog.

XL dogs like Newfie’s can’t stand for very long without getting tired, so a lot of us accommodate by doing as much of it on the ground as we can. This can create so much pain the next day that you might reconsider grooming XL dogs in the first place!
Whatever position you are in, keep your back as straight as possible. If you need to bend over, hinge from your hips instead of rounding your back. It may help to bend your knees to keep a straight back. Keep your wrists straight and keep your feet flexed to protect your knees.

Yoga & meditation taught me to use my breath to bring me through any moment I may be feeling. It’s the strongest asset we have in our bodies.

Breath acknowledges thoughts and sensations & allows them to be just as they are. Thoughts and sensations change all the time while breath is the only constant.

My breath kept me so calm and introspective that the nurses did not believe I was in real labor. Before we left, I had the nickname “Superwoman”.
