Time for some "cone of shame" FAQs! 🤓 One of the most common questions we get is "Does my pet really need to wear an e-collar?" Let's get into it! 👇
When your pet has a wound (or a surgical incision), it is their natural instinct to lick or nurse it. Caring for an injury is natural for your pet. However, if your pet is allowed to tend to their wound, they could reopen the incision and introduce bacteria, which could cause a nasty secondary infection. Your pet would then need a second surgical procedure and treatment for the infection, which creates unnecessary and avoidable stress for both you and your pet.
So if we are recommending an e-collar (short for Elizabethan collar), then YES, your pet really does need to wear it! When it is placed correctly, an e-collar keeps your pet from tending to their wound, and helps to avoid unnecessary complications. It is a temporary protective measure that is essential to your pet's healing process.
