Time for some "cone of shame" FAQs! 🤓 One of the most common questions we get is "Does my pet really need to wear an e-collar?" Let's get into it! 👇
When your pet has a wound (or a surgical incision), it is their natural instinct to lick or nurse it. Caring for an injury is natural for your pet. However, if your pet is allowed to tend to their wound, they could reopen the incision and introduce bacteria, which could cause a nasty secondary infection. Your pet would then need a second surgical procedure and treatment for the infection, which creates unnecessary and avoidable stress for both you and your pet.
So if we are recommending an e-collar (short for Elizabethan collar), then YES, your pet really does need to wear it! When it is placed correctly, an e-collar keeps your pet from tending to their wound, and helps to avoid unnecessary complications. It is a temporary protective measure that is essential to your pet's healing process.

Did you know that we have a separate kennel room specifically for our feline patients? Our cat kennel room is a quiet and calm space separate from the dogs, which helps to keep our cats' fear and anxiety levels low during their stay. Sandy had a quiet and comfortable stay with us for her glucose curve (and got lots of love too) 🥰

This past Monday our hospital closed early for a team training, so we wanted to give you a peek! Dr. Flanagan from Dermatology for Animals in Akron came and facilitated a dermatology wet lab for our team, and we were amazed by her wealth of knowledge on the subject. This training involved a few of our patients who have complicated skin issues; Dr. Flanagan walked us through how she would approach diagnosing their conditions using examination, sample collection and microscope analysis. We had a little bit of fun too. 😉 Thank you, Dr. Flanagan, for your time and expertise! 🐾
