An interesting article but incomplete. The author does not mention veterinary reference lab, and the pet food companies owned by Mars Corp. It is this diverse investment that allowed Mars to avoid FTC oversight. BTW Mars controls over 35% of the total US vet market. It is the corporate competition from referral and emergency care clinics that the veterinary teaching hospitals need to compete with for Boarded vet specialists. Supply of Board vet specialist is so low some vet colleges are bringing in international vet specialists.

Corporations and private-equity funds have been rolling up smaller chains and previously independent practices.

Great news for all cats. Japanese scientists have identified and made two (mouse and cat) unique AIM proteins that would extend the life of cats with kidney disease. 30% of US cats have kidney disease at 10 years of age. Kidney failure kills many cats. We might see this drug available in Japan as early as next year.

As a result of the MVMA’s opposition and the decision by seven GOP legislators to side with this trade association rather than support protecting innocent and healthy cats from this animal cruelty, many cats in MN will continue to have their toe bones and claws barbarically amputated by unethical declawing vets and will have a lifetime of pain and suffering.

The MVMA told legislators that according to their survey, only 30% of their member vets perform it. (Only 783 of their member vets, out of 2000, answered their survey question, which shows that it is an incomplete and half ass study. Also, 1/3 of MN vets are NOT members of the MVMA.) Our survey of 85 vet clinics in MN found that 61% of them declaw cats.

Always take the high road and educate.
