The famous retired St. Francis K9 Bane has been recognized for his accomplishments with a Distinguished Service Medal.

The medal, awarded by the Animals in War & Peace organization, honors animals for their service both in civilian and military duty.

While the official award presentation won’t take place until March in Washington, D.C., Bane, a German shepherd, was honored locally on Dec. 13.

Sinbad’s story began in 1938 when he was found on the streets of New York. The appealing puppy was smuggled aboard the 327’ Campbell by two crew members.

Sinbad’s exploits, travels and escapades soon made him famous.

“An old sea dog has favorite bars and plenty of girls in every port,” reported Life Magazine. He had an autobiography, was paw-printed, and interviewed by ABC news.

Sinbad the puppy became a popular crew member, with “his own service number, medical history, bunk, uniforms, and battle station.”

Not only did he catch a German spy mapping Allied positions, but he also saved Soldiers with a nose that was acutely sensitive to gas attacks. After Stubby rotated home, he met presidents, led hundreds of parades, and eventually became the official mascot of Georgetown University! 🐾🇺🇸💥
