Look for my paper on the importance of balanced training and the misconceptions of positive only training. Should have it done by the end of the week. It will be published in my group and I will have an announcement with a link attached here.

Have a great week!

Tip:

If you're wondering how long is okay to keep your dog outside for a potty in the yard (i.e just a line or free roam, no dog house or anything) when it's below 35ยฐF, 30 minutes is the appropriate time.

Dogs with short hair may need extra protection like humans when temperatures reach the freezing point, which is 32ยฐF. This can be a jacket or a sweater. Dogs with long double coats may not need anything.

Older dogs and puppies will need extra protection also, such as a jacket or sweater.

Jackson is at the point where he will need a jacket. He's short haired and 10 years old. Time spent outside without a jacket will be limited to 20 minutes, anything longer will be with a jacket on.

As always check your local and state laws for laws pertaining to temporary and long term keeping of animals outside for winter months.

With the holiday's fast approaching and people looking for the perfect gifts to give, one gift often gotten is a new pet. Here are some things to remember when purchasing a new pet.

- Keep an eye out for scammers. Scammers always prey on those looking for a cute new puppy or kitten to give to their kids or significant other. Unusually low prices, reluctance to allow an in person meets up to view the parents or to pick up, and lack of proper paperwork such as vet records or registration are all red flags to watch out for. Also designer breeders pop up like crazy and often these pets are not healthy tested so be careful and do your homework.

- Don't buy if you are buying because the pet "looks cute". Pets are more than just a cute cuddly thing. They do grow up and they need care and training otherwise they wind up with problems. This is a common reason these animals wind up in shelters or are returned to breeders.

- Do your homework. Make sure the pet your buying or adopting is right for you. There are many breeds and mixes and not all have the same temperament, drive, and care requirements. For example German Shepherd is not the same as a Labrador Retriever in temperament, size, drive, or care requirements such as feeding/grooming/exercise. And a mix of the two can be a totally different toss up of the two as mixed breeds are often a roll of the dice when it comes to the genetic traits they inherit from their parents.

Have a happy holiday and reach out or comment with questions regarding this subject or related subjects. I will gladly answer to the best of my ability.

Just got the first snow for myself personally yesterday afternoon in Sharpsville Pennsylvania. Will need to buy Jackson a coat, poor guy doesn't want to leave the porch to p*e in the morning and I don't blame him.

That being said, this is a PSA for anyone who may be kenneling outside this winter or that use a runner to let their dogs out.

Remember, even if they have a double coat you need to make sure they have the ability to get away from the cold: a dog house, make shift cove/hole with cover, even a spot on your porch with a heat lamp will do just fine. If you are leashing/tethering for a temporary amount of time, keep in mind they still need to get away from the cold.

As for your short coated, single coated, or hairless dogs. They may need extra protection. This may be in the form of a jacket or coat of some kind, or a heating blanket/lamp.

Check your local laws on tethering and kenneling for prolonged periods of time, whether it's only a couple hours, or they are simply an outside dog. Make sure they are protected and that you are following city/county/state ordinance for outside keeping of animals.

With that being said, have a safe and warm winter. Drive carefully on the roads, bundle up on your walks with your pooch and have a blessed weekend!

There's more to dog body language than this alone. But these are the basics. Remember to never approach a strange dog, whether it's with someone or not. Not all dogs want to be pet, and not all owners want you to pet their dog. Some are in training, some are nervous, some may be aggressive or reactive, and sometimes an owner just wants to enjoy their dog.

There's a ton of debate on the ethicality of using muzzles in every forum and page that focuses on dogs or dog training. Honestly, it's hilarious to me. Let's dive into the issue ... or non-issue, and I'll tell you why. There are 3 types of muzzles. Basket muzzles, soft/cloth muzzles, and ag...
