Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

Happy happy birthday to this beautiful little lady! Miss Dottie is a whole 1 year old now! 💖🎉 She's been a student since she's was itty bitty! Her pawrents are out of town so Lilo and I are making sure she celebrates! Without you Dottie girl, I would have never met Lilo! So wonderful to have you as a part of our lives in The Underdog Academy! 🥰🐾🎉

As a trainer with a non-reactive dog... Who's perfect dog experienced trauma from 2 incidents, therefore becoming reactive. It is MY job to always advocate for his space and sanity. You can't force me to feel comfortable with every situation as a human. I can't force my dog to be comfortable with everything either. It pays off. My dog has become more confident as we work through what scared him.

As a trainer, I am very picky about my dog boarding anywhere. I wouldn't have thought boarding at a vet would have been an issue.

I had an appointment at Banfield in Shawnee. I was asked if I'd like to move my appointment to an earlier time slot and do a drop off instead. It was just for some nasal issues (not contagious) that reoccured and needed further testing. I left my beautiful clean dog at 9am, my partner picked him up close to 3pm and received him in this filthy wet, crusty condition, with a festering hot spot. It's like he was laying on a wet floor/kennel for hours. He came home drinking like he never drank all day.

I asked what happened... They said he slobbered from anxiety. He HAS been kenneled before. Dropped off for the day at another vets office and grooming salons for half a day or more with no issues. There was no slobber on his mouth or chin, which you would see from anxiety. It's like he knocked over a water bowl and was laying on a filthy wet floor for hours. He had a nasty hot spot that festered from all the moisture he was sitting in. Also, slobber isn't gray and brown. So that area was dirty and they left him there like that.

I told them that I get dogs slobber, I get dogs pick on themselves when anxious although he has been kenneled before with no issues elsewhere.... maybe this time it was rough. Maybe he was awful. But why was he not dried off or wiped down? They took several hundreds of dollars and said nothing until I called multiple times. Why did they not see he was anxious and clean the area up so it was dry? I guarantee he did not lay down right away. He hates being wet.... He probably stood and waited, then gave up and laid in the nastiness as there was no other option.

I know my dog well enough to know from boarding elsewhere, he's never been this way. But I'll say that dogs do have moments of major anxiety and will do things out of the norm from time to time. But I immediately tell clients if their dog is anxious, I don't let them sit in wet environments if there is an accident, spilled water, slobber. And on the off chance they are dirtier than before, I clean them off, and always let the owners know prior. The care I give my OWN dog is the care I give to my client's dogs.

They gave me a "free exam" and meds to treat the hot spot that got nasty from the hours of wetness he laid in. But it wasn't enough. I have to share because my clients that may go there should know that if one dog was treated poorly there, chances are it's not the first time. Accidents happen. I understand that. Handing over a dog in a different condition, with no explanation until pestered multiple times about what the hell happened is not okay.

What a great week off with my 2 best friends! Shiloh showed Lilo the ropes on off leash ecollar training. Lilo successfully started to enjoy a car ride for the first time ever! Shiloh was 100% the cool calm and collected dog I needed while working with Lilo in public environments! So proud of them both! A much needed rest for us all now!

The Kennel on Wheels got a deep interior clean! Wayyy over 200+ dogs have ridden in this car, hung their head out the windows, slobbered, rolled and rubbed around, scratched tons of hair everywhere, have even gotten car sick... It happens! Although I do clean it, this year with the weather this winter I didn't have a great spot to do it and frankly was tired this time. I didn't get a before picture... But the floors were not black they were white with furrrrrrr. There was slobber crusted everywhere (always inevitable after a good off leash session🐶).
Reflection Addicts did an amazing job! My car feels sooo nice and smells not like dogs at all! He was great communicating and went above and beyond with my car. This car aka Kennel on Wheels has had so many dogs that I kind of accepted that it would ever be "fully clean". Reflection Addicts got into all the nook and crannies that I struggled to do on my own. If any of you don't feel like deep cleaning your car after all those doggos, contact Reflection Addicts!

‼️DO WE HAVE ENOUGH PATCHES?!?!‼️
Apparently... We do not. I can't tell you how many people today tried to get past me to get close or pet my dog. I had one lady who said she hadn't seen those patches before so she proceed to get closer. As I told her to please give me space... She clapped back with "I'm just looking and reading them all." Well lady... If you WERE reading you would have immediately listened and given me space. Instead she proceed to get closer and stand to "admire" my dog, so I once again had to ask her to please leave me alone. Just so you know, I was at a self checkout trying to pay and leave. Why a random stranger thinks it's okay to hoover and stand AT the register while someone is paying is beyond me. But I have a dog with me... So it must be okay to invade my space....
Why am I ranting?! Because someone else's dog IS NOT out in public for YOU to pet them, for your benefit, or entertainment. If you see, ANY dog out in public...
🐶Never approach without asking. Keep your distance, unless the owner gives you the OK.
🐶 If it says do not pet... Don't even ask! (Believe it or not, people still ask all the time with all these patches on...)
🐶 If someone ask you to give them and their dog space. DO IT! They could have a medical issue like anxiety, or PTSD. Even their dog can have PTSD from bad experiences and their owner is trying to work and train to better their dog.
🐶Do NOT distract anyone’s dog by whistling, asking them to come to you, excitedly trying to get their attention. Just because they aren't a service dog, doesn't mean you should distract them. If you wouldn't cat call a child to come to you... Why would you do so to a dog?
🐶Did you know Service Dogs are not required to wear any gear that states they are a Service Dog? So you should never distract a dog, because they very well may be a Service Dog working. The owner may want to feel like everyone else, and not point out that maybe they have a medical issue or need, by gearing up their dog.
🐶 If you ever think an owner is being silly or ridiculous for not letting you or your child pet someone's dog.... I want you to pretend that dog is not a dog... but a human child. Then ask yourself if you have the right to think a parent is ridiculous for not letting you touch their child, talk to their child, get close to their child, especially if their child is uncomfortable with strangers. If you wouldn't do it to a human child... Don't do it to a dog.

I'm gonna step off my soap box now. But for real... If you love dogs, respect the owners and their dogs when out in public.
