A Special Thank-You to Pet P.L.A.Y. and the Petfinder Foundation!

Thanks to a generous donation from P.L.A.Y. Pet Lifestyle And You in partnership with the Petfinder Foundation, we received multiple cozy P.L.A.Y. mats — and some of our most vulnerable animals have already been benefiting from the extra comfort.

Meet three pups who aren’t available for adoption, but whose lives were brightened by this gift:

❤️ Pico

Pico is our tiny senior Min Pin with the biggest heart. He was found on the side of the road in KCK — blind, declawed, missing fur, and carrying old injuries that never healed properly. Despite everything, he is a joyful little soul. While he continues to receive extensive medical care, Pico spends his days curled up on his P.L.A.Y. mat in his foster home, soaking in every bit of warmth and softness.

💜 Ophelia

Ophelia came to us as a scare stray, recently having had puppies and unsure of who she could trust. During her time at our shelter, she needed emergency surgery — and one of these soft P.L.A.Y. mats helped keep her warm, comfortable, and safe while she recovered. This shy-but-loving girl is now in a foster-to-adopt trial, soaking up all the comfort she deserves.

💙 Skylar

Skylar is a 7-year-old deaf Aussie who lost her lifelong owner and was absolutely heartbroken and confused when she arrived. Her transition into foster care was tough at first, but she quickly found comfort snuggling and playing on her P.L.A.Y. mat. And the best part? Her foster fell in love and recently adopted her — giving her the second chance she needed.

Why Expand? For dogs like Miley - one of our beloved hospice fosters, whose story reminds us why our hospice program matters so deeply.

Miley is nearly 15 years old. She came to us in 2022 after growing up alongside her teenage human — but as life changed and her person started a family, Miley was surrendered to Melissa's Second Chances. 💔

She arrived with a severe dental infection and a heart condition, but what she lacked in health, she made up for in heart. Miley quickly earned her place as a cherished member of our hospice program — where love and comfort take priority over time.

Today, Miley lives in a hospice foster home surrounded by cozy blankets, daily snuggles, many foster siblings, and a human family who absolutely spoils her. She may not be adoptable, but she’s more than worthy of a life filled with joy.

🐾 Our hospice program is for animals like Miley — the seniors, the medically complex, the overlooked. They may not have much time left, but we make sure the time they do have is filled with dignity, warmth, and love. Because every senior deserves to feel safe, cherished, and loved — no matter their story.

Meet Branch – The Gentle, Sweet-Faced Snuggler 🖤🤍

Branch is a young boy with a sleek black-and-white coat and an incredibly loving nature. Just like his namesake, he may seem a little shy at first—but give him time, and he’ll melt your heart with his sweetness.

Once Branch knows you, he absolutely blossoms—he loves kisses on his face, gentle cuddles, and cozy time with his favorite humans. He’s very affectionate and enjoys being near people he trusts. Branch does great with other cats (especially his brother, Guy Diamond) and is curious about dogs but prefers slow, careful introductions. He’s also wonderful with children and enjoys their company once he feels comfortable.

Healthy, neutered, and vaccinated, Branch is a sensitive, loving boy who just needs a calm environment and a patient family to help his personality shine. Branch and Guy Diamond share a close bond and would LOVE to be adopted together, BUT they can also thrive separately with plenty of love and patience.

Thank you so much to PetSmart Merriam for the incredible donations for our rescue! From food, treats, toys, costumes, supplies, and more - PetSmart recently loaded up multiple cars full of items for our animals. We are so appreciative of partners like PetSmart that help us with critical pet supplies.

Meet Miss Ketchup!

This Shepherd mix gal was surrendered through no fault of her own when her owner had to move and couldn’t take her along. Now, she’s ready to find a forever home where she can shower her new family with love.

Ketchup is a quiet girl who rarely barks but lights up with joy when she sees her people. She’s a world-class kisser, a loyal little shadow, and absolutely adores kids — though she may take a bit of time to warm up to new adults. Her ideal home would have kids around 8 and up, as younger children can make her a bit nervous. Her foster says she’s a great companion who loves snuggles, but isn’t too needy.

She does great on a harness and has excellent leash manners (no pulling!), though she will happily chase every squirrel she sees. She loves her walks and play sessions. Fetch is one of her favorite games — she’s still working on the “let go” part, but having a blast practicing.

Ketchup has not had a single accident in her foster home. She’s potty trained, kennel trained, and has even been left uncrated while her foster was at work and did wonderfully. She sleeps soundly through the night — whether in her crate, on the couch, or cuddled up in bed if you let her.

She’s full of energy and loves anything she can chew on, especially if there are treats involved. She’s a pro at catching Cheerios mid-air! She knows “sit” and “lay down,” and is currently learning “shake” just for fun. She’s easily redirected and eager to learn.

Her foster’s resident cat tolerates her, so she may do well with a dog-savvy cat given proper introductions. She’s playful and curious around other dogs and may do best with a larger or male dog after slow, proper intros.

Ketchup is eligible for our Foster-to-Adopt program, which means you can take some time to get to know her in your home before finalizing the adoption. It’s a great way to ensure the perfect fit.

Meet Tilly — The Gentle Heart Looking for Her Forever Home 💛

Tilly is a 7-year-old fawn-colored Terrier mix (with a touch of Pit Bull) who’s been through a lot but continues to greet life with quiet resilience. She was abandoned at a boarding resort earlier this year and cared for by kind staff who made sure she was safe, loved, and given a second chance.

This 40-pound sweetheart has a calm, gentle nature and is happiest when she’s near people she trusts. She’s crate trained and well-mannered when left alone, content to rest quietly until her next walk or cuddle. Tilly can be shy around other animals and prefers slow, patient introductions — she just needs a little time to know she’s safe.

Tilly is healthy and ready to start her next chapter. Her ideal home is one that offers stability, kindness, and understanding — a place where she can truly belong.

This is Gunner and we are begging for someone to notice this sweetheart. He is the happiest, silliest low-rider you’ll ever meet. Can you believe it has been over two years that Gunner has been waiting for a home? That’s right. He’s approaching a milestone that we don’t want to celebrate, approaching 1,000 days in our care. That is about 14 years in “dog-who-deserves-a-home-already” time.

Gunner isn’t just a dog—he’s a full-on vibe. He’s the ultimate bro’s dog (rides shotgun, chills while you grill, cheers for your team, low energy, silly snuggle bug) and honestly…he can be anyone’s dog. Gunner just wants to be your ride-or-die. 💯
