Signage on Midland Drive and Interstate 435 indicates that the Kansas Department of Transportation contractor will close Midland Drive under I-435 next week, potentially as early as Monday, June 24.
While we are still waiting official word from KDOT on this next step, we wanted to make sure you had as much fore-warning as possible.
It should be noted, only east-west traffic on Midland will be impacted. Both the northbound and southbound on-ramps to 435 will be open until the full traffic control measures are put into place over the course of the next several weeks.
Drivers on the east side of 435 can access the west side of Midland by traveling north and utilizing Shawnee Mission Parkway to take 435 South to Midland Drive.
Drivers on the west side of 435 can access the east side of Midland by travelling south on 435 and exit on 87th Street and travel back north via 435 or Renner Boulevard. Renner is also the most direct route to access Shawnee Mission Park and Theater in the Park.
The early closure of the Midland underpass is, as has been explained by KDOT, due to preparatory work the contractor must begin to construct the crossover lanes, access the bridges' earthworks, and move in equipment.
This project is the responsibility of KDOT. We will do our best to provide updates as we receive them from the State, but please know there will be many answers that can only be provided by KDOT and its staff. For information regarding this and other on-going KDOT projects in the KC Metro area, please visit KDOT's page by clicking here. The City of Shawnee will continually update the community as we receive information via the City's social media channels, email updates, and on our Midland Project website that you may access by clicking here.
We also wanted to provide you detour maps for you to share with your customers, employees, and vendors. Please find the detours by clicking here.
