This is from a well-run municipal shelter in Michigan today. This is the truth and reality of most shelters everywhere. đŸ˜« People caused the problem and it's people that are going to have to fix it.

Please do not breed your dog. Please do not buy from a breeder.

Please open your heart to a lifelong commitment and adopt. When you adopt, please give the dog a good 3 to 4 months to settle in and decompress before you judge.

Please help people be aware and how to help.

Please microchip and register your dog so they don't end up a stray.

“Help is needed ...

The dogs are suffering. We can’t say this to the public, because the average citizen will never truly get it unless they’ve been involved in rescue. And frankly, we don’t need digital warriors pointing out our failures right now. We need help. We need adopters and homes that aren’t there. We need more space to house the overwhelming number of dogs. We need rescue
 we need you!

Our dogs aren’t surviving the shelter. Not because they’re sick or because they’re aggressive ... at least they don’t start off that way. They’re sitting in their own bodily filth for almost 24-hours a day. We have the same staff and volunteer base as we had with 60 dogs, and now there’s almost triple that amount. We’re frantically trying to keep up with care but falling short. And it’s not only dogs who are feeling the effects, human morale is low because we feel like no matter how hard we try, we’re barely keeping our heads above water. Not all the dogs sit in filth - the potty holders don’t always. They just hold it until they feel like they’ll burst. Sometimes there’s blood in their stool from holding it so long. Before, there was a whole half of kennel they could do their business in and keep it out of their living space. Now that half of kennel is taken by another dog who’s also desperately trying to hold it or just succumbing to living, eating and sleeping in their own f***s.

Adoption rates are as low as morale. So ... what do we do with these forgotten, abandoned suffering dogs? We wait. We wait until either the miracle of adoption or we wait until they slowly fall into depression, anger, and desperation until they bite. They fight us going back into their disgusting kennels and they bite. They become overwhelmed by the piercing noise of hundreds of dogs, and they bite. They lash out at other dogs and redirect and then bite. And then they are euthanized. Because we cannot adopt a dog out who has been slowly driven into madness after months of drooling, shaking, or pacing.

We’re suffering, because we’re watching it happen before our eyes and we feel helpless. We keep pushing, keep trying, but we’re losing good dogs because in Michigan, dogs are being bred and abandoned and there just aren’t enough homes for them all.

We know you can’t solve our problem and we’re not expecting you too. It’s a problem we’ve been fighting for years and will be for years to come. But we are begging for help because we need it now more than ever. Even one dog who leaves is a dog who has a future. Right now, for the dogs, the future is bleak. So please help if you can, even 1 or 2 dogs could open up space.”

The Ten Commandments of Dog Ownership

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be very hard and painful for me. Remember that before you adopt me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Please be patient with me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well being.
4. Do not be angry with me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends and your entertainment. I only have you!
5. Talk to me, even if I do not understand your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me. You only have to look at my tail!
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it!
7. Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you. (DON'T HIT YOUR DOG!)
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I am in pain or sick, or my heart might be getting weak and I cannot tell you.
9. Take care of me when I get old, you too will grow old someday.
10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, “I can’t bear to watch it” or, “let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there.

** And always remember, I Love You!
