Proper training for your puppy is super important! Building those good behaviors when they're young will lead to a happier and safer life for you and them.

Happy Tails Learning Center for Dogs is one of our favorites, but there are many great trainers in the area to help you on your journey. Even if your furry friend is a bit older, there's always things they can learn!

February is National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. Spaying at the proper age depending on your pet's species/breed is vital for providing for their long-term health and assisting with the overwhelming population of animals in shelters.

The benefits of spaying/neutering your pet are significant:

-Your female pet will live a longer, happier life.
-Spaying prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer.
-Spaying nearly eliminates the risk of breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50% of dogs.
-Spayed female dogs live 23% longer than unspayed female dogs.
-For cats, the urge to spray is extremely strong in an intact cat, and the simplest solution is to get yours neutered or spayed by 4 months of age before there’s even a problem.
-Your male pet will live a longer, happier life as well.
-Neutering prevents testicular cancer and problems with the prostate gland.
-Neutering greatly reduces their risk for perianal tumors (at or near the a**s).
-Neutered male dogs live 18% longer than unneutered male dogs.

To schedule or discuss your pet's spay/neuter with Family Paws, please call (586) 837-2278 or visit our online portal at www.familypawsvet.com

Yes, puppies tend to explore the world through their mouth. If it will fit, they'll chomp. If it won't fit, they'll try until it does.

Keep your puppy safe by checking around your home to keep dangerous items out of their reach, make sure they receive plenty of stimulation daily and have safe/approved toys to play with!

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats). Cats were already known to be susceptible to the H5N1 virus, with several feline cases linked to poultry or wild bird exposure before the cattle outbreak began.

Cats appear to be particularly susceptible to severe illness, often resulting in death. Dogs may be infected as well if they come in contact with or ingest infected birds. The good news is that infection can be prevented with a few simple practices.

-Refrain from feeding pets any dairy products or colostrum that have not first been pasteurized or thoroughly cooked to kill the virus.

-Thoroughly cook meat before feeding, and avoid feeding raw meat-based treats or diets.

-Keep pets indoors when possible to prevent exposure to birds and other wildlife.

-Avoid contact with sick or dead birds and other wildlife yourself.

-Keep pets away from livestock, poultry, and their environments, especially in areas with known H5N1 outbreaks.

-Thoroughly wash your hands after handling your cat and after any encounters with poultry, livestock, or wild birds and other animals.

-Change your clothes and shoes, and thoroughly wash any exposed skin, after interacting with sick or dead animals that may harbor the H5N1 virus, and before interacting with your pet.

Immediately contact your veterinarian if you notice signs of H5N1 or think your pet might have been exposed to the virus.

Think warm thoughts! Some cold weather tips for your furry friends this winter!

Protect paws: Use a paw protectant or booties to protect your pet's paws from snow, ice, salt, and chemical de-icers.

Keep pets inside: In severe weather, keep your pet in your house or garage.

Provide clean water: Make sure your pet has access to clean drinking water that doesn't freeze.

Clean up antifreeze: Clean up any antifreeze spills immediately. Antifreeze is sweet-tasting and can be fatal to pets.

Don't shave your pet: Long coats provide warmth, so don't shave your pet down to the skin.

Don't leave pets in cars: A car's interior can quickly become dangerously cold in the winter, so never leave your pet unattended in your car.

Have an emergency plan: Make sure you have an emergency plan for your family that includes your pet

Have an energetic pup and wondering how you'll get their energy out on those days when going outside just isn't the best option? Try some of these tips to wear them out indoors!

-Train and Reinforce New Tricks/Commands - This is a great time of year to work on the basics and some advanced tricks!

-Treasure Hunt - Place some treats or their favorite toys around the house and see if they can find them!

-Obstacle Course - Basements work great for this! Set up some obstacles and help them get out their energy running around, over and through various obstacles you can make with household items!

-Food Puzzles - Whether it's a puzzle-box you've purchased or simply some treats in an empty 2L bottle, this can help with mental stimulation and make your pup happy!

With wind chills at or near 0*F recently and coming up, it's important to ensure you're ready for winter for your furry friends! Be prepared for power outages, make sure they have a warm cozy place they'll be safe and have enough supplies on hand!

Most shelters and rescues in the area are at or near capacity and this time of year only makes the issue worse, so if you're looking for a new friend, consider adopting some of the great felines and canines who are just looking for their furever home :)
