Tomorrow we start our official celebration of National Vet Tech Week! 🎉🐾🐎❤️

At Companion Animal Vet, we take this opportunity to celebrate our whole team of invaluable technicians and assistants, while making sure to recognize our "techs" that graduated from the Baker College Veterinary Technology Program.

Each member of our team brings their own talents and expertise. We are so grateful for their skills, dedication, and love for animals.

Let's take this opportunity to show them our appreciation for their dedication to providing top-notch care to your beloved pets, and for all their hard work behind the scenes. Veterinarians couldn't do what we do without them!

Thank you to our amazing team for everything you do!

As the times are changing, travel regulations are too. Interstate travel will remain the same, meaning to check with the state of destination and comply with required documents needed (rabies certificate/health certificate, etc.).

As of August 1, 2024, travel into the United States is going to change. The new USDA regualtions require dogs to be over 6 months of age to travel into the country. Regardless of where you go, there is another form needed for return travel back across the border.

If you frequently vacation in Canada or Mexico, these rules will apply to your pets if they go with you as well. It does not make a difference which country, every dog entering the U.S. will be required to have the specific documentation.

Failure to get the correct documents could mean that your pet will not be allowed to join you back across the border. They may be held at an animal care facility at your expense until the situation is cleared up.

If you are planning a trip, please make sure to call us at least 2 months in advance so we can help get paperwork ready. There are certain timeframes in which some aspects need to be completed.

We are happy to help with any questions. Please remember these regulations will be new to us as well.

Today we had the pleasure of cleaning the teeth of Julie's dogs, Dixie and Atticus. Julie, as one of our Licensed Technicians, noticed some extra tartar/calculus accumulating on their large molars with some redness along their gum lines.

When pets come in for a dental procedure/cleaning under anesthesia, we make sure to check each tooth individually, utilizing radiographs to help us visualize the roots of the tooth. Any tooth that is broken, infected, or damaged is removed at this time. We then clean the remaining teeth and polish them too! We have a wonderful team of Technicians that monitor the anesthesia closely while our fantastic Doctors do their work.

Julie, as their technician, was able to stay with her dogs the entire time, helping with their radiographs, cleaning, and polishing.

If you notice any difficulty chewing, signs of infection, or anything else concerning you, make sure to let us know. We can schedule an exam to see if a dental cleaning is a good idea for them too!

Superhero Mia helped save the day for little Teddie today! By donating her blood, we are able to use the serum to help heal Teddie's eye ulcer. With him being so little, we needed a larger dog to donate the amount we needed. Mia was more than up for the task, always willing to help! Good thing she came to work with her mom today! Teddie was adament that he needed to meet his donor and give her kisses, so we had to let him 😄

On average horses drink 7-10 gallons of water a day and this remains as important in cold weather as it is in the summer because reduced water intake can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as the dreaded impaction colic.

Studies demonstrate that horses will drink more if provided access to heated water and that most water consumption happens within three hours of feeding. How can you use this information to your advantage? Refill buckets at feed time with warm water to maximize your horse’s water intake—especially in the winter when water is more likely to be freezing or close to freezing.

As always, if you have any questions or would like to learn more about preventing colic in your horse, your equine veterinarian remains your best source of information!

Brought to you by the AAEP Horse Owner Education Committee.

This week we celebrate Veterinary Technician Week! Please help us in celebrating our amazing LVT's that we love so much. Here is a bit about them:

Angie grew up in Fountain and went to Baker College. She has been practicing here with us for 10+ years now with our small animals! In her free time she loves to play with her Doberman Sasha, admire classic cars, and spend time with her family. We love her to pieces and are so thankful to have her!

Julie grew up in Zeeland and attended Baker College. She has been working with both small animals and large animals for over 6 years! In her free time she enjoys snuggling with her dogs (2 dobermans and a boston), competing on her axe throwing league, and spending time with her horse! She is an amazing woman that dedicates so much to this profession!

Hayley grew up in Hesperia and also attended Baker College. She has been with us for a little over 2 years now. She loves to play with all the patients that come to see us. In her free time she loves to nap, eat at Chick-fil-A, and spend time with her dogs and cats. We admire her dedication to our patients and are very happy we get to have her with us.

Even though the week is for the Veterinary Technicians, we love to take the week to celebrate our entire staff. Please feel free to drop some encouragement for our staff in the comments!
