New School Year, New Curriculum!

We are launching a comprehensive equine education program at Blue Horse Riding!

We are excited to introduce a brand-new offering at Blue Horse Riding designed for participants of all ages, from 6 years old to adults! Current students and new students are welcome! Our comprehensive equine education program provides weekly group lessons for just $100 per month. (Family discounts offered)

What does this program include? Participants will gain hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge in areas such as equine terminology, ground handling skills, tack and equipment, nutrition, exercise physiology, stable management, preventative health care, emergency response, and much more!

Why is this important? Unlike other sports, horseback riding involves working closely with an animal that relies on you for care and guidance. Understanding your horse’s needs and being able to recognize when something is wrong is crucial for both your safety and the horse’s well-being. Knowledge is safety. A rider who can interpret a horse’s body language or identify poorly-fitted tack is less likely to experience unexpected issues.

Handling horses carries inherent risks, but by learning safe practices for leading, longeing, tying, trailering, and stable management, you can significantly reduce the chances of an accident.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to deepen your equine knowledge and skills in a safe, supportive environment. Enroll today and take the next step toward becoming a more proficient and confident horseman!

Best regards,
Hayden Buntin

There's a new face at the barn!

Welcome home, Clark! (After a windy, hilly drive home- thanks Carolyn!!)

Kaitlyn has known him a while and heard he was for sale. After telling me a little about Clark, Kaitlyn didn't really have to twist my arm too much to go see him. Well, I fell in love with this laid back, cuddly, massive guy! He has so much potential, and we are thrilled to have him at our barn!

Here is a neat reminder that the Lord cares even for the animals. Look at all of the different ways horses are able to keep warm in these temperatures!

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice, good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

8 whole years.

Scout has been my boy for 8 years. In that time I have gotten to share him with so many of you, and he is a barn favorite for sure! I've lost track now that I am not the only instructor, but my last count was that he has taken over 100 riders on their very first ride. His sweet, patient temperament had roped many into a lifelong love of horses.

Do you have any memories to share about Scout?
What do you love about him?
