There's a new face at the barn!

Welcome home, Clark! (After a windy, hilly drive home- thanks Carolyn!!)

Kaitlyn has known him a while and heard he was for sale. After telling me a little about Clark, Kaitlyn didn't really have to twist my arm too much to go see him. Well, I fell in love with this laid back, cuddly, massive guy! He has so much potential, and we are thrilled to have him at our barn!

Here is a neat reminder that the Lord cares even for the animals. Look at all of the different ways horses are able to keep warm in these temperatures!

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice, good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

8 whole years.

Scout has been my boy for 8 years. In that time I have gotten to share him with so many of you, and he is a barn favorite for sure! I've lost track now that I am not the only instructor, but my last count was that he has taken over 100 riders on their very first ride. His sweet, patient temperament had roped many into a lifelong love of horses.

Do you have any memories to share about Scout?
What do you love about him?

Welcome, Jordan! We are so glad to have you as part of our team!

"I had a later start into the horse industry but have dove in head first. I have always had a love for horses but was unable to ride until I was 13. Since then, I have competed in IEA, AQHA, PtHA, IEA, 4H, VOLRHA, IHSA, and ASHA events. I have competed in Hunt Seat, Western, and Ranch disciplines, but I have a huge heart for the reining and cow horse. I graduated from MTSU in 2022 with a major in Horse Science. I found a passion for teaching while helping out with beginner horse camp at my lesson barn in high school. I helped teach weekly lessons there until I graduated college in 2022. I have also taken several courses throughout my college career that helped fuel my passion for teaching. I love being able to share my love of the horse with others and watch the personal growth in my riders. I enjoy helping my riders learn how to become not just better riders but better horse people with a focus on learning from the ground up with the horse. I want to make an impact on my riders and have them find the confidence to continue to be present in the horse industry."

We still have some lesson availability, so feel free to reach out to schedule your first lesson!

Hey there, everyone! Elijah is here! He is absolutely precious and we are all doing well. I cannot thank my wonderful instructors (that's right, that's plural! I'll get you in the loop on that one soon!) enough for keeping everything running smoothly while I focus my attention right where it needs to be. ♥️

New helmet research was just released comparing brands. Check this out if you are looking to update your helmet! Remember, riding helmets expire after 5 years from the production date found printed on the inside of the helmet or sooner if left exposed to extreme temperatures, such as being left in the car.

Virginia Tech (USA) Publishes Independent Equestrian Helmet Ratings

With sponsorship from Jacqueline Mars, USHJA, USEF and USEA, Virginia Tech in the USA have rated a total of 40 equestrian helmets using the STAR evaluation system.

The impact tests evaluate a helmet's ability to reduce linear and rotational acceleration of the head from a range of head impacts a rider might experience. Helmets with more stars provide a reduction in concussion risk for these impacts compared to helmets with fewer stars.

The real surprise is that paying more doesn’t necessarily give you better protection. The top two helmets were 8x different in price!!!!
