2 releases today as the temperatures are high enough. Crocus and Oakley are being released into a garden that already has hedgehogs active at night. Each of them has a hedgehog house and they will also be support fed …

Both hedgehogs, a female and a male, weigh around 1kg..and have been desperate to get out..

Frankie was released last night 💙

He came back to rescue for pre-release checks and was given the all clear …

He did have to breathe in when I commented on the fact that any more second helpings and he would have been at Slimming World for a few weeks before being given the all clear!

Look at ringworm Roger’s fluffy tum!

As well as arriving with a mahoosive peanut stuck in his gnashers, Roger had ringworm, which had made him lose the fluff on his chest and tummy…

A couple of weeks of medicated baths and Roger is all floofed up again..

This big lad, weighs 1168g this morning and will very soon be ready to get back home 🦔

Good morning everyone…

Here’s our Hetty, she’s had a few ‘ups and downs’ but she is now weighing 658g and it’s time for another medicated bath this morning … which Lorraine, one of our regular Thursday volunteers will do …

Hedgehogs are definitely waking up and after the long months, they are hungry… please support feed to get our spiky little friend back up to pre hibernation weights 🦔

Roger will remain in rescue until we can get on top of the ringworm situation… we will then send him home 🦔💙

Now, there’s awkward …. And there’s Roger! 🤦‍♀️

There is absolutely no way that Roger will open his mouth, we have tried everything, but nope! He’s having none of it!

Looking at his p**p (of which there was plenty!) .. it is full of peanuts, which makes it even more likely that there is a peanut stuck in the roof of Roger’s mouth…

Hedgehogs are opportunistic and will often eat wild bird seed, including peanuts, that fall from bird tables… Peanuts and sunflower seeds can then get stuck in the roof of their mouths, which then leads to infection and starvation..

The plan is to get Roger to our vets for a look at his mouth under sedation …

(You can also see Roger’s very bald chest and tummy.. we will be treating him for ringworm)

I know…. Yes, we are closed … but that mouth needs investigating. I suspect a peanut is lodged in there.

This big hedgehog, who weighs over 1kg, is now named Roger… and also has ringworm (ringworm Roger .. sorry 🥴)

It’s this time of the year when the trees are bare, it’s cold, the rescue is quiet(ish) because a lot are overwintering with our volunteers…that I wonder if we will be as busy this year, as we were last ….

Someone remind me of this post in July, when we’ve got 70+ hedgehogs in rescue and more at the gate waiting to be admitted and I’m tearing my hair out…..😳

Meet Florence..

Florence was admitted last weekend and had been found out in the daytime, in the middle of the road in Briestfield..

She has a high tick burden, roundworm and had quite a few hitchhikers of the jumping kind

The good news is that Florence has put 60g on since arriving. I’m hopeful that she will make a full recovery and will be ready for release in the springtime 🦔❤️

Hettie is out of the incubator, tucking into breakfast and Brambles meaty is going down rather well! 😋

P**p and skin scrape checks this morning show that Hettie also has mites, lungworm and roundworm .. we now have a treatment plan in place .. 🦔

Say hello to Hettie, who arrived yesterday from Brighouse… This is who I have been posting transport requests for, so a big thank you to our volunteer drivers.

Hettie had a very mangled back leg, which was infected and very smelly! 😷

She had been struggling for a while and had been seen out in the daytime over a few days. Thankfully her finders managed to secure her and thank goodness that they did, as this little girl would have been in immense pain..

In discussion with our amazing vets at Donaldson’s, it was agreed to give Hettie a chance and amputate the leg ..

Here she is, now back in rescue. She’s got a long way to go, but for now, she’s out of pain and resting in one of our incubators ❤️

Horatio is awake from hibernation… 😴

Horatio was in a secure garden with our boy Chestnut.. He went to sleep back in October and has slept all through the last few winter months.

He now only weighs 450g and so has a bit of fattening up to do - p**p samples were clear this morning, so all good 🦔💙

Busy boy Chestnut making his bed 🦔💙

Chestnut is awake from hibernation and doesn’t he look well? 🦔💙🐾🐾 Many of you know the story of our little ‘Peter Pan’ hedgehog, who now lives in one of our foster carers homes.. You can see an early photograph of this little boy in the comments 💙

This little girl was caught on the camera on Friday night, looking to be in a very sorry state.. 😢 Luckily this was at the home of one our experienced volunteers .. Michelle Michelle spent last night waiting for her return and in the early hours of this morning, she got her! This poor hedgehog has got quite bad ringworm on her face, a fungal infection that will be very itchy, making the skin sore and prone to infection .. She also has had a ‘near miss’ with a strimmer in the recent months - thankfully only her quills on her back have been cut and not her skin ..

‘By eck’ …it’s a tad chilly out there this morning 🥶 Remember Mabel, the hedgehog that climbed over the partition in her cage, rather than just walking around it? (I’ll post the video again in the comments if you missed it ☺️) Here she is tucking into her Brambles food this morning.. Mabel has a head tilt and unable to fully curl up, so we have a home for her in a secure garden when the weather improves a little .. Stay in and stay warm, that’s our advice and you’ll soon be able to see some of our fabulous Christmas gifts, when I get them posted on the page 🎄🧑‍🎄

Morning all Sorry that I haven’t done any updates over the past few days … We are inundated with juvenile hedgehogs, more so this year than any other year … 😫 All of our cages are full with little ones like this.. We keep all hedgehogs separate unless part of the same litter, to prevent cross contamination, as every one of these youngsters is poorly I’ve ordered an additional heater to warm up the cold hut and so we can use this as an extension to the main hut… 🦔 [We cannot send any out to foster until they are clear of parasites and all medication has been completed]

Buttercup, Buttercut, Buttercup… What a pickle you keep getting yourself into! Brought into rescue as a hoglet - Strike 1! Returned back to rescue for getting trapped in a shed 🤦‍♀️ and only weighing 350g … Strike 2! Released back again from rescue at 650g to get stuck back AGAIN in a shed and now weighing only 275g…Strike 3 and that’s your lot madam! Do you just like the en-suite, all inclusive option here with us? 🦔❤️ Fill your boots sweetheart… 🦔

It will soon be time for some more hedgehogs to leave us and go home 💙..🦔🦔🦔
