Here’s to the dogs with True Grit.

Day 4 in the sage brush seas, down to one boot, chest rubbed raw, 75 degrees by noon, and it would have taken horse tranquilizers to keep Cody from hopping out of the truck every time we stopped. At the end of the day what else can you ask for? No quit and true grit.

It’s puppy season. All over the US some amazing breedings are hitting the ground. If you’ve thought about a well bred dog, now’s a great time!

Which seems like a great time to remind people that ethical breeders are not the problem. In fact ethical breeders are the answer to the problem, ethical breeders sell puppies to ethical dog owners, and ethical dog owners spend the time finding these ethical breeders, and neither do they turn their dogs over to shelter.

Top notch breeding. Both Cooper and Eyla are both very nice dogs and then epitome of the breed. Each have a minimum of VGP testing which is one of if not the most difficult hunting dog tests available with two days of grueling subjects! These puppies will be the perfect age when hunting season rolls around!

A little different perspective on why we choose the Deutsch Kurzhaar:
The dogs are great. We love the dogs. But there’s more to a dog breed, dog club, or any other level of involvement with a dog breed. The People.

When I first came to the breed I had reached out for help training my GSP to a very well known trainer and breeder, he acted like the complete egocentric jerk he has since showed himself time and time again to be.
The other person I reached out to was Tyler Smith, owner of .v.hochland and the next day he spent 2 hours on the phone with me discussing everything hunting dogs. Since then we’ve become and helped build one of the best communities and families we could ask for. Every group has its lemons but there’s a long list of people in our lives that we’ve met through DKs all across the world that we wouldn’t be the same without.

Hunting season can take a toll on a dog. Long days, rocky ground, tall brush, each take their own affects on a dog whether it’s beating up pads, wearing all the skin off their chest, ending the season looking like an Olympic distance runner.
But. These dogs are athletes. This is what they were bred to do. These days there are professional athletes that spend more on their nutrition and fitness than most people will spend on a house. Take care of your dogs like the athletes they are, they’re going to get worn down and beat up, it’s part of the game, do your part and take care of them with a good diet, get them out to exercise in the off season, and be prepared for emergencies in the field.

KS Quinn vom Klepelshagener Forst

Quinn is a proven stud having bred many times in Germany and sired remarkable pups spread throughout the world. As a Kleemann (KS) dog we are excited to bring this caliber of dog into approved breeding programs here in North America. We are especially grateful to Marieke Hein for entrusting us with such a remarkable DK.
Quinn arrived in Utah spring of 2023 and was hand delivered by his former owners. To say this dog is loved by both his German and US families is an understatement. Beyond his accolades in the German system, Quinn’s most notable trait is his temperament. He has quickly adapted to being loved by over 20 kids and grandkids and if we didn’t require his best behavior, he is the type of dog that would end up on your lap. He is eager to please and adapts quickly to new environments.
Marieke describes Quinn as “a very easy-going, intelligent dog.” Furthermore, she states that “during hunting, whether in the field, in the water or on searches, he impresses with his very high passion, coupled with intelligence and stamina. His predatory sharpness is absolutely uncompromising.”
If you know, you know. The Klepelshagener Forst lines have proven time and time again to develop both champions in the show ring and field. These dogs consistently exhibit dense coats, intelligent and biddable minds, and true confirmations. Calm in the home and fierce in the field.

Kaycee is everything you could want out of DK. Calm and loving around people and children, with a fire and flair in the field. Kaycee has a commanding presence in the field and has proven herself time and again on wild game.  Kaycee has shown a natural steadiness since 10 weeks old when we first ran her on birds; since then she has been in the uplands chasing Ruffed Grouse, Dusky Grouse, Sharptailed Grouse, Sage Grouse, and Partridge.  Her success on wild game does not end there though, she has proven steady on fur, and has handled raccoons, earning her HN.  She has hunted for waterfowl on creeks, rivers, lakes, and ponds and has a phenomenal drive to retrieve and excellent behavior in the blind, staying quiet and allowing for an enjoyable hunt.
One of Kaycee’s greatest attributes is her water drive. Spring, Summer, Fall, or even our blistering Idaho Winter, Kaycee’s water work is first class. She is a quick and strong swimmer, with as thorough of a search on the water as you could ask for. Her sire has been noted by many judges as one of the finest DKs on the water in North America. Kaycee was also introduced to blood-tracking at a very young age and is very methodical and precise tracking blood, furred, and feathered game.
She is a highly intelligent dog, always thinking a step ahead. One of the many benefits of her exposure to many different species of upland game is that we have gotten to see her search adapt and change with different types of cover; using a closer, tighter search in the thick woods, and opening up to cover ground for the prairies and sage brush seas.
Kaycee’s AZP3 was at no fault of her own. In back to back years we had a change in our jobs, followed by the greatest blessing of our first child. Kaycee’s prize three had nothing to do with her abilities as a dog but my time management as a trainer. As a hunting and family companion, you would be hard pressed to find a finer dog, and the proof is in the pudding.

Who’s had a dog they’ve always known would be special?
Kaycee was one of those. Working her butt off to find sharptail, holding steady to flush, relentlessly searching for downed birds in heavy cover, chasing down wounded birds, and finishing it off with a smooth deliveries to hand. And always an attitude that put a smile on your face…even if it was as you were dodging the steam roller headed for your knees.
