🌨️ How to Safely Warm a Hypothermic Animal 🌨️

In these frigid temperatures, it’s crucial to protect our furry friends from hypothermia. If you encounter a hypothermic animal, here’s how to help:

⚠️ Avoid Rewarming Too Quickly
Rapid warming can cause severe complications, including organ failure, neurologic dysfunction, and clotting disorders.

Steps to Safely Warm a Hypothermic Animal:
1. Move the animal indoors to a warm, dry space.
2. Wrap them in blankets—use dry, insulated materials.
3. Provide gentle warmth with a warm (not hot) water bottle wrapped in a towel, or place the animal close to your body for shared heat.
4. Avoid direct heat sources like heating pads or hair dryers, which can burn their skin or cause shock.
5. Monitor their body temperature if you have access to a thermometer.

🚨 Seek Emergency Veterinary Care
• If the animal’s body temperature is
less than 97°F, or
• If the animal is unresponsive.

Stay tuned for a real-life case highlight!

Let’s work together to keep our fuzzy friends safe this winter! ❄️

💡Did You Know? 💡

Just like us, our furry friends can experience cognitive changes as they age. But did you know there are specially formulated diets designed by veterinary nutritionists to help combat cognitive dysfunction and promote healthy aging in dogs?

Research shows that proper nutritional support can reduce inflammation, improve brain function, and address other signs of aging.

✨ Two standout options:
➡️ Purina Neurocare
➡️ Hill’s b/d

These diets incorporate powerful ingredients like omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, and antioxidants to support brain health and enhance longevity.

If you’d like to learn more about how these diets could benefit your pet, give us a call or stop by Shelley Veterinary Hospital. Together, we can help your pets live their happiest, healthiest lives! 🐶❤️
