We at Adopt-A-Pet are asking for your help for our shelter dog Lexi! Any amount would be appreciated. Please see Lexi's story below.

Lexi came into AAP on 09/29/2022 an amazing happy and athletic girl who won the hearts of Volunteers immediately. She loves her trail walks, carrying up to three balls at once in her mouth, and is a fetch master! She is enjoying her time with us at AAP!

One Sunday morning in November I came in, and Lexi would not get up. Her entire mouth was white, and she would not eat or drink water. Assistant Kennel Manager Helena, and I assessed her including vitals that ironically were all in the normal range.

Monday morning Bruce AAP President and I transported Lexi to Pinehurst Veterinary Hospital, where she was received by Dr. Capsey. It was discovered she had a huge rock in her stomach. She was extremely anemic with a red blood cell count of 21 and received blood transfusions. After she was stable, Bruce, Helena, and I transported Lexi to Blue Pearl Lakewood where she was received by Dr. Cammarano. Lexi spent the next 5 days fighting for her life. She received more blood transfusions, blood thinners, prednisone, Gabapentin, and an attempt was made to remove the rock via scope in her esophagus. Unfortunately, this procedure did not work, and the rock remains in Lexi.

Lexi was diagnosed Chronic Anemia, IMHA, and all the Doctors believe the rock is a factor. She was released to AAP care to continue her medications and recuperate. Her red blood cell count at this point is 33. Her total expense for six days of emergency care is $10,695.50

Lexi is now strong enough to undergo abdominal and stomach surgery to remove the rock she is carrying around which will be performed at Pinehurst by Dr. Capsey, and their in-house Abdominal Resection Specialist. We are asking at this time for donations to help cover her previous medical costs, and her pending surgery which is estimated to be $5000.00 to $10,000.00

We at AAP love Lexi and are very grateful for her strength to survive another day. Thank you for the excellent care she received at Pinehurst with Dr. Capsey and his staff, and at Blue Pearl with Dr. Cammarano and her staff. They literally saved her life. We will keep you all posted on Lexi's progress.

Special thanks to Hailey Kelley, for sponsoring and providing the pictures of Lexi for this post.

RINGO BOY Dog of the Week!

Meet RINGO BOY! He is a 7-Year-Old (YOB 2017), 67 #, Pit Bull Terrier gentleman who is very good and sweet! His White and Black coat are accented by his soulful brown and blue eyes.

***PITBULL TERRIER / LARGE DOG EXPERIENCE PREFERRED. NO SMALL DOGS. NO SMALL ANIMALS. NO CATS. RINGO BOY HAS ALLERGIES TO GRAINS, CHICKEN, AND FLEAS. HE IS ON A BEEF DIET, TAKES NEXGARD THE 10TH OF EVERY MONTH, AND HAS APOQUEL MEDICATION DAILY***

Ringo Boy is a great companion and family dog, who has a very respectful, and mellow disposition. He is playful, sweet, and friendly! RB enjoys car rides, water both swimming and bath, is content to be with his people, and keeps a tidy kennel. He is crate trained (not for long periods of time), enjoys toys especially rope for tug, and has a sweet curious nature. Ringo Boy has lived with children whose ages range from infant to 10, shared his home with a female Aussie/Lab large breeds only, and cats and small animals are a no go for this guy. He would do best in a quiet neighborhood, or country setting. A secure 6 foot fenced yard is required to keep him safe and happy!

Meet BEX! He is a 29 #, 8-month-old (DOB 02/01/2024), Australian Cattle Dog / Kelpie mix boy who hails from the great state of Texas!

***HERDING DOG EXPERIENCE PREFERRED***

Bex was living in Foster care in TX, and here are his Foster Mom's notes! A secure fenced yard is required to keep him safe and happy!

Mr. Bex is a total ham. He knows he is gorgeous, but he is also here to entertain the crowd! He LOVES people and other dogs. Cats unknown. Bex loves toys and snuggles, he knows the “sit” command and will be quick to learn new things especially if treats are involved.

Bex enjoys sharing his people and toys with other dogs. This handsome, friendly
and happy dog will of course be a hit wherever he goes. Bex is protective of his food and would prefer to have other dog’s food as well as his. We suggest that you feed him separately until you get a baseline on his food habits.

GOOSE Dog of the Week!

Meet GOOSE! I am an 80 #, 7-year-old, super good-looking and friendly Boxer/PitBull mix with a brindle and white coat that is perfect for receiving all of the pets you would like to give. I am loving, smart and happy. Because I am young, strong, possessive about my toys (possibly food), and enthusiastic about life; I need an all-adult home only, without children, who are able to follow instructions for my care. You will have to work diligently on the toy and food possession on a daily basis. If you can provide an animal-free home, provide prescription diet food, love, exercise, and a secure fenced yard, then you may be just what I am looking for! Let's get together and discuss our future life. I am open to possibilities and hope you will consider me to be your forever best friend.

***PITBULL TERRIER / LARGE DOG BREED EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: GOOSE REQUIRES MULTIPLE VISITS WITH SOME INTENSIVE TRAINING TO DETERMINE IF A HOME VISIT IS POSSIBLE. WE APPRECIATE YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND PATIENCE. GOOSE HAS SENSITIVE SKIN, AND EATS PRESCRIPTION RABBIT PROTIN ONLY WITH APOQUEL MEDICATION. GOOSE HAS ANXIETY AND TAKES FLUEOXTINE DAILY TO KEEP HIM CALM***

It is National Senior Pet Month!!! We at Adopt-A-Pet would like to showcase our seniors!!

Why adopt a senior pet?

1) They are all grown up, puppies and kittens have a lot of energy and if you are not ready for all of that, a senior pet is just what you are looking for.
2) Their size and personality are already established! However, it will still take some time for any pet to become accustomed to your home and routine. So, it might take a while for their true personality to shine through.
3) Even with the above, don't forget you can still teach an old dog new tricks with positive reinforcements and patience.

If you want to learn about any of our senior dogs at
Adopt-A-Pet please visit our PetFinder page to read their Bios. Any of them might just be what you are looking for.

It's with a very heavy heart to inform you that our annual Santa Photo Fundraiser 2024 will not be occurring this year. This was a very difficult decision but unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, several of our Santa volunteers are unavailable to host the event this year. We will be exploring other options for fundraising opportunities and will keep you updated on future events.

Adopt-a-Pet appreciates your continued support and we hope to be back next year and look forward to seeing you then.

Thank you for your understanding.

Happy Holidays

LINA LOU Dog of the Week!!

Meet LINA LOU! She is a 1-year-old (DOB 09/01/2023), Australian Cattle Dog mixed girl who hails from the great state of Texas!

***HERDING DOG EXPERIENCE PREFERRED***

Lina Lou was living in Foster care in TX, and here is her Foster Mom's notes! A secure fenced yard is required to keep her safe and happy!

Lina is quite the character. She is almost puppy-like with her energy and attitude. She loves to have something to chew on and she loves to wrestle with her foster brothers. We are working on kenneling by command only, but in the evening she will kennel herself in her crate in our room, almost as if she’s saying “I’m done for the day guys, goodnight!” She is an equal opportunity snuggler, and she will happily hang out with anyone who is doing something busy.

She is extremely dog friendly, and she learned pretty quickly to leave the chickens alone, although sometimes you can see her watching them and debating whether or not she wants to chase them. Her obedient behavior has won out the past week or so though, which is great progress from her arrival when she wanted to lunge at any feathers she saw. She also really wants to play with our cat the same way she plays with the dogs, but he is not amused. At all.

She is a bit of a thief if you leave your things laying around, but she’ll quickly drop it if you tell her no. She is also doing very well with potty training, only having accidents if you wait too long to let her out like most younger dogs. Lina is a loving little clown, and you can just see the intelligence behind her puppy dog eyes. She wants to please you and tag along with whatever you do, and she will be a great addition to some lucky family! We will all miss her when she leaves.
