🌱 Organic Site Preparation Workshop 🌱

🔍 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻:

Effective, 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀 for establishing new planting areas.
How to use 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴) to control unwanted plants like pasture grass and weeds, preparing your soil for gardening success.

𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲: This workshop will involve 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿:

If you needed another reason to come to our fundraiser tomorrow, we did just throw a fresh coat of paint on our shed that definitely warrants a, ‘dang, looks good’

So come by and tell these kids yourself. And stay for some delicious barbecue. And some awesome items to bid on. And some live music.

And that’s a wrap! Today we concluded our 2024 Older Youth Employment Program! One of our talented students taught us all how to make tamales, we shared our favorite memories from the summer, and we hung out in our party pants all afternoon. (And of course we celebrated our very own Mr. President: Odie) Thanks to all these incredible kids who make this program possible 🤍🤍🤍

Mark your calendars! We are hosting a fundraiser on September 7th at Mason General - home of our flagship garden space. There will be fresh, delicious food, a silent auction, and opportunities to learn about all of our amazing programs! Our organization would not be able to do what we do if it wasn’t for the help of our incredible community. Bring a friend! Bring your mom! Bring someone you know who loves to garden, cook, or empower youth! And we will see you there :)

🌸Summer is in full bloom!🌻

Last week we had .birthwork talk to us about being a birthworker is all about! We learned so much about inclusive birth, building boats, and the ability to change our minds as many times as we want.

When asked about dealing with burn-out, Anne said, “I am the crispiest little potato. Have trust and support in colleagues and friends, and be honest with yourself about the support you need. Nothing has taught me more about asking for support than birth work. You need to help yourself in order to help others. Oh, and hug your dog. All the time”

Week 4: COMPLETED. It was so full and fun! We welcomed Alden from and he talked to us about all things opening a small business, following your passions, and enjoying life even when it can be so dang confusing. Alden said, “It’s way cooler to be excited about something than to make people feel bad about things they’re excited about. There’s too many other things in life to be bummed about other than the things you love” and we couldn’t agree more! 🌻🍅🥬

We built 3 new beds at Callanan Community Garden this week! Our partnerships with .cd and CIELO have kept this garden full and flourishing this summer

Veggie fritters are one of our favorite things to make in the summer when the garden is in abundance! We used shredded potatoes, zucchini, squash blossoms, thyme, dill, garlic, and onion to make these ones and they were delicious. You really can use anything on hand to make these! We also made homemade raspberry syrup to sweeten lemonade with! 🍋

Week 3 of OYP was awesome! We received the most amazing & abundant donation of tomato, eggplant, and squash starts that we planted at our hospital garden and at the Callanan Community Garden. We braided garlic, harvested calendula, and had our first guest speaker of the summer to tell us all about his super cool job at the Olympic National Park building trails. We are forever inspired by our community members

Last week was the first week of our Older Youth Employment Program! We got so much done including painting the shed, building benches, and constructing a brand new shade canopy using recycled wood!!! These kiddos are powerhouses and learning new skills every day

You know it’s been a good week when you’re having too much fun to take enough pictures AND when kids are cheering “I want more veggies!!!” as you’re cleaning up

This week we made homemade healthy ranch dressing with two of our classes. We cut up lots of cucumbers, carrots, and peppers to dip and it’s safe to say it was a hit

When we finished out our 2023 Older Youth Program this fall, our students build a beautiful new gate for our Hospital Garden. Learning and practicing skills like building and woodworking are amazing for growing confidence, teamwork, and generating success. We love creating projects and watching our hard work come to completion before our very eyes!

Workshops and skill-building wouldn’t be possible without the help from our amazing community partners and donors. Speaking of which…

We will be embarking on a matching donation campaign this new year in partnership with the HOST Program! Together, we will be looking for community matches to their generously gifted $5,000. This fundraiser is crucial to the success of our program. Inflation and increasing operating costs are hitting us harder than ever this year. In order for HOPE to continue supporting Mason Co. youth in 2024 we need support ourselves.
