We never need pain to train.

PLEASE SHARE – I appreciate what shelters and rescues do to find homes for unwanted pets. However, I am not alone in my concern about the treatment of some pets receive at some shelters and rescues.

When I recommend a shelter or rescue, I expect three things:

1. They are a member of the Pet Professional Guild. Membership in the PPG only costs a shelter or rescue $35/year. A small investment to demonstrate their commitment to “No, Pain, No Force, and No Fear,” and inconsequential considering the wealth of information available to them as part of their membership.

2. They have policies in place, ensuring that they follow the PPG Guiding Principles and the AAHA Canine and Feline Behavior Management Guidelines.

3. They have signed the Shock-Free Coalition Pledge.

We cannot treat fear with fear or trauma with more trauma. Meet the dog where they are and give them what they need starting with their Biological Needs, Emotional Needs, Social Needs, Force-Free Training needs and Cognitive needs.

People please stop losing your dogs. Yes accidents do happen but of the hundred dogs I have seen missing so far this week how many were really accidents? Was the dog on a leash held by a competent adult? HWas the dog being supervised in a securely fenced yard? Letting your dogs out unfenced and unleashed is asking for a problem. Leaving a dog in a fenced yard all day and or all night is asking for a problem. Relying on an underground shock fence to keep your dog safe is asking for a problem. I know you love them so do better.
