How to initiate contact with an unfamiliar cat 🐈🐈‍⬛?

😻Letting the cat initiate and control contact during the initial interaction reduces the chances of creating a threat perception in the cat.

Avoiding looking directly into the cat's eyes 👀, squatting down to its level 🧎‍♀️, extending your arm and presenting the back of your hand, is the proper way to introduce yourself in a friendly manner to an unfamiliar cat 🐱.

The purr 😻 is a particular sound well known among cat lovers. It is produced by the rapid and rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the larynx muscles that regulate the passage of air towards the vocal cords, causing vibrations whose frequency ranges from about 25 to 150 vibrations per second.

🐈 Cats usually purr when they feel safe and relaxed, when they interact with us and other cats in a friendly way, and when they eat; but also, when they feel sick, hurt and in pain.

🍼 Purring has been naturally selected as a way to communicate effectively between the cat mother and her calf. The mother recognizes each of her kittens by their unique way of purring while nursing them, thus ensuring that each of them receive her milk 🥛.

🧐 The cat’s purr is not known, but it could have been accidental. Kittens kneading (and purring at the same time) stimulated a greater milk 🥛 production. This trait could have benefited these kittens and then passed on to subsequent generations, becoming something characteristic of 🐈‍⬛🐈 cat species.

🤔 Could it be then that purring in the adult cat occurs due to certain stimuli that elicit memories and pleasurable sensations associated with maternal care? Could be. In fact, it is the imminence of friendly contact and interaction with us and other cats, the presence of food, and the kneading what often provoke the voluntary purr response.

Is it possible to achieve a peaceful coexistence between our domestic cats and their natural prey?

🐈 The socialisation sensitive period is a key stage in a kitten’s life. During this period, which spans from its 2nd – 7th week of life approximately, the foundations for future social relationships will be established. This includes the relationship cats will have as an adult with other cats and with individuals of other species, including those that are naturally part of its diet: 🐀🕷️🐦🦎🐠.

🐈 Positive experiences with other species during the socialisation period are so important that they can even suppress their predatory instincts. 👍 The coexistence of our cats with other species, even with their natural prey, is possible, as long as both species have been raised together.

🖐️ If we are going to gather them as adults, we should first evaluate the cat's history: Is it an indoor cat or does it go out? Has it hunted animals before? Try to consider the cat´s behaviour in the presence of its potential prey, always taking in account safety first.

🧐 Although we may come to think that the both species´ behaviour can make it difficult for them to coexist, in reality this is not the case.

💬 Communication is, in the end, stimuli that get different meanings thanks to associative learning. Coexistence and repeated interactions between both species will end up reinforcing their understanding, especially when this occurs at an earlier age (during socialization period).

🐈🐕 To increase the chances of acceptance between cats and dogs, it is recommended to encourage affiliative behaviours through the implementation of exercises (social games or treats) and including elevated perches or suspended walkways that allow the cat to temporarily isolate itself from the dog whenever they want.

All mammals, to a greater or lesser extent, are social animals. Even though wild cats live a lonely and territorial life, are social animals, too. On the other hand, domestic cats learned that living in small groups was more successful in adaptive terms. However, things do not always work harmoniously with each other.

🐈❤️🐈 Encourage tolerant relationships between our cats, anticipating any conflict that may arise between them, is essential to avoid future problems.

✍️ Some general tips:

✅ Make sure there is more than one resource per cat: food bowls, scratchers, litter trays, resting places, shelters, and toys. Cats prefer to share than compete, as long as there are enough resources for all, and every cat can have access to them anywhere and anytime.

✅ Promote stimulating activities that foster a good relationship between them, such as hunting (through play), climbing, hiding and exploring.

✅ Sometimes, cats may kick, ambush, and even scratch or bite each other, but then they play, share spaces and even eat together. These behaviors are useful for setting limits. Interrupting them with punishments and permanently interfering with how they communicate could negatively influence their relationship.
