In light of recent cases seen here at Big Goose Veterinary Clinic, local Sheridan veterinary offices, and nationwide practices - we feel it is critical to inform our clients of what is a currently ongoing outbreak amongst the canine populous of
ATYPICAL CANINE INFECTIOUS RESPIRATORY DISEASE of UNKNOWN CAUSE.
We are only referring to it as such because as of now, it IS an upper respiratory infection, however, it's exact causative agent has yet to be determined.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Cases reported three general clinical symptoms:
Chronic mild-moderate tracheobronchitis with a prolonged duration (6-8 weeks or longer) that is minimally or non-responsive to antibiotics.
Chronic pneumonia that is minimally or non-responsive to antibiotics.
Acute pneumonia that rapidly becomes severe and often leads to poor outcomes in as little as 24-36 hours.
Common SYMPTOMS have included:
Coughing
Sneezing
Hacking (Your dog may present as having something "stuck in their throat" or "trying to gag")
Ocular (Eye) / Nasal (Nose) Discharge
Lethargy
Overall difficulty breathing
*If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms we encourage you to call us so that our technicians may talk you through your pet's condition and promptly assist you in any medical care deemed necessary.

HOW YOU CAN PREVENT IT:
->Shared from the Oregon Medical Veterinary Association:

Reducing contact with large numbers of unknown dogs. Just like with other respiratory pathogens, the more contacts your dog has, the greater the risk of encountering a dog that's infectious.
Reducing contact with sick dogs. This can be harder to determine but if a dog looks sick (coughing, runny nose, runny eyes), keep your dog away from it.
Keep sick dogs at home and seek veterinary care.
Avoid communal water bowls share by multiple dogs.
Ask your Veterinarian for advice on which vaccinations your dog should have.
If it's sick, consider having your dog tested with a PCR test to help determine the causative agent (viral/bacterial), if possible.
*We encourage you to call us if your pet is experiencing any of the above listed symptoms.
*Calling PRIOR to bringing your pet in is HIGHLY recommended so that our doctors and staff can properly prepare for your pet's needs and arrival.
*Upon your arrival we request that your pet STAY in the vehicle while you check them in [this also means to please keep them from walking around outside the clinic as well].
**You can call us if you'd prefer when you arrive if you'd like to wait with your pet in the vehicle and we will have your technician come to you.

---Thank you kindly and stay safe!

*Thank you to the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association for their article and information collected and allowing us to share this information with our clientele.
