Hilde update! The little cat that was found broken and freezing, caught on a fence, is recovering wonderfully after her amputation! At first we were pretty sure Hilde was feral, but she is slowly starting to trust us and I can now pet her head and give her some nice ear scratches. She is only 7 months old, so we are fairly confident that with love and time she will come around and become an amazing companion for someone. We are so glad someone found her before it was too late and reached out to us. Hilde's story could have ended in tragedy, but instead, she gets her second chance! Thank you to all of our amazing supporters. Every dollar, reaction, comment, and shared post makes a difference!

Lavender update! X-rays show that nothing is broken, but she has a lot of inflammation along her vertebrae where the attack occurred. We were correct that her bite wounds are old, and because she went untreated for so long, she has several draining tracts of infection that will take time to heal (in some cases, these types of wounds never fully heal). That being said, she already looks SO much better after a few days of antibiotics! She is eating well and giving us lots of love in return for head scratches. She is not a huge fan of seeing other cats when she is out of her kennel, but that is not unusual for an injured cat who has been trying to survive on her own for several months. With time, we hope Lavender can start to feel safe and eventually find her forever family! Thank you so much for your support of this sweet girl. We will continue to update you as her journey progresses!

Acorn update! This little girl is a fighter, and she's going to need that spirit to get through, as she has a long road ahead of her. The bite wound in her abdomen also cut off the blood supply to a large segment of skin in the surrounding area, which means that skin will become necrotic and slough off completely before being replaced by new skin. Acorn will be dealing with an open wound for quite some time while this process occurs. Also, because she is only 8 weeks old and terrified, she isn't really moving around or grooming herself, so all of the infection is collecting in pockets in her abdomen - this is keeping her fever much higher than we would like. We are flushing her with diluted betadine daily to try to get as much out as we can for her. Acorn has started eating pretty well, but she is still losing weight each day as she battles the infection and inflammation.

X-rays on Tuesday revealed that the dog bite also caused damage to her spine. She has a fracture at the facet joint of one of her lower vertebrae, and the dorsal spine of that vertebrae has broken off. It does not appear to be affecting her reflexes or mobility (other than causing pain so she doesn't want to move much), so we are hopeful that time will also heal this wound. Her future family will just have to watch for signs of arthritis as she gets older.

Thank you all so much for your support of this little girl. It's so hard to see such a tiny baby in so much pain and fear, but we are doing everything we can to show her she is loved and safe. She is getting plenty of pain medication and antibiotics, and our vet team is optimistic about her future. Please continue to send healing thoughts her way, and we'll keep you updated on her journey!

Yesterday, the Rainbow Bridge gained a beautiful, perfect soul. Pip, although you were with us only a short time, we were honored to receive your love and gentle kisses - and yes, even the occasional love nibble. I'm so sorry that cancer overcame your little body. We knew when we found that it had metastasized from the melanomas on your skin and into your lungs that you were in constant pain and ready for your release. Sweet girl, I hope we can meet again one day. You touched the hearts of so many people in such a short amount of time. Rest in peace and fly high ❤🌈

On Saturday, we took in three injured cats, all within an hour of each other. I've already introduced you to Acorn and Lavender in previous posts, and today I'm here to introduce you to Pip.

Senior cats hold a special place in our hearts here at SCSCR, so while my heart breaks for all of the injured babies that came to us on Saturday, Pip's story is especially wrenching.

The moment we laid Pip on the exam table to take a look at her on Saturday, she started to give us kisses. She licked our hands and purred vigorously. If we put our faces down next to her, she licked our noses, too. We noticed that she has lost most of one ear to frostbite, and she is skinny and too weak to stand. She is unable to even hold her head up for long periods of time without assistance.

Most concerning, however, is her front right leg. We are not sure if it is broken or dislocated, but it sticks straight out, cannot be bent without pain, and prevents her from being able to move. Poor Pip cannot even get into a litter box at this time, so she eliminates on her blankets and we keep her changed and clean. We bring her food and water regularly and assist her with sitting up to eat (and boy, does she LOVE to eat!).

Pip is scheduled for x-rays and bloodwork on Tuesday, so we will have a better idea of her prognosis moving forward. If her body is able to survive anesthesia and surgery, she will likely need her leg amputated, as it is clear this injury has been plaguing her for a while and it is likely too late to save her leg. We will have to assess, however, if putting Pip through a major surgery and forcing a senior cat to be a tripod is in her best interest. Pip seems like a fighter, and we will give her every chance we can, so long as it does not prolong any suffering. Please send loving thoughts towards Pip as well as the staff and vet team here at SCSCR as we work to make the right decisions for this sweet girl.

Donations for Pip's current care and potential future surgery are welcomed with gratitude!

Yesterday was a really long and sad day for us, as we took in not one, not two, but THREE really sweet, injured cats. Yesterday I introduced you to Acorn. Today I would like to share Lavender's story. Lavender was picked up as a stray and taken to one of our rescue partners. They immediately noticed she was having difficulty walking and knew she would need more medical care than they could provide, so they asked us to take her.

When we first met Lavender, we made two observations: one, she is incredibly loving, and two, her fur was matted in strange, sticky clumps all over the lower half of her body. I had a sneaky suspicion of what it was, and a quick shave proved me right: her fur was matted with blood and pus. Lavender's entire back, hips, tail, and abdomen are riddled with puncture wounds, my guess is from a dog attack. Every time we thought we had found them all, we shaved another patch of fur and found more injuries.

While many of the wounds are still open and bleeding, you can also see the web of scars that tell the full story of what this girl has endured. This attack happened quite some time ago, and she has been living in pain all this time, hiding from more predators at night who surely smelled the stench of infection emanating from her body.

Lavender is now on antibiotics and while her surface wounds will heal, we are worried about internal damage to her back, pelvis, or hips. We have scheduled her for x-rays on Tuesday and after that we will know more and can make her more comfortable.

In the meantime, we have enjoyed getting head bonks and purrs from this little one, and can't wait to continue getting to know her. As her wounds close up and her fur grows back to cover the scars, we hope that her emotional scars will also fade as she receives nothing but unconditional love from this point forward. Welcome to your second chance, Lavender. We are honored to have you with us.

Donations towards Lavender's extensive medical care are greatly appreciated ❤

Please join me in welcoming our newest little one, Acorn! This sweet girl had a rough day after she was attacked by a dog. With a large puncture wound in her abdomen and shock settling in, she managed to drag herself to a person for help, who immediately scooped her up and brought her to SCSCR.

Acorn had a low temperature, was pale, and was still actively bleeding from her injury. She was also terrified and exhausted. We immediately got her into our temperature-controlled incubator and assessed the extent of her injuries. We were unable to determine whether the puncture had gone through her body wall, and decided that it would be better to get her seen on an emergency visit to a local clinic. After sedating her, the veterinarian was able to patch Acorn up and said she needs antibiotics, time, and love. Luckily, we have all of those things!

Acorn is now tucked into a cozy bed with a fuzzy blanket. She still hasn't eaten for us, but we are hoping that she starts to feel better tomorrow! We can't wait to show this sweet girl what it's like to live the good life.

Acorn's emergency vet bill today was a few hundred dollars, so we would greatly appreciate any donations to help us cover the cost of this plus her future care.

Welcome to your second chance, Acorn!

Today's is Agatha! That's right, this sweet girl is all healed up and ready to find her forever family! Agatha will never regain vision in her right eye, but it does not bother her and should not need any further treatment (if it does, her new family just needs to reach out to us and we will get her taken care of at no charge!). This sweet baby is ultra snuggly, loves belly rubs, and is great with kids. She is a diva who likes to be the queen bee, so if you have other cats in your home, Agatha might take some time to adjust to sharing. We are so excited to introduce our Agatha to everyone, so she is going to spend the weekend at Petco - Sheridan Wyoming! Stop by and say hello to her!

Look at this handsome guy! Mozart is a BIG boy, weighing in at over 17 pounds. He also has the cutest pink nose, perfect for booping. He is just three years old and very healthy. Mozart was adopted from us in 2021 as a kitten, so we were surprised to get a call earlier this month from a local pet boarding facility that he had been abandoned. His owner dropped him off, paid for a few days of boarding, and then never returned for him. Multiple attempts to contact his owner failed, but his microchip still linked back to us, so we brought our baby boy (who is not a baby any more!) home to SCSCR.

Mozart was pretty stressed and angry for a couple of weeks, but he is settling in. He really wants to get out of here and be back with a family - preferably one who won't abandon him! Mozart does okay with other pets, but he needs a lot of personal space. He would prefer a home where he is the only cat, but would also do fine in a large house with other cats/dogs where he has his own territory and plenty of one-on-one attention from someone. If Mozart sounds like he would be a good fit for you, let us know! He can't wait to meet you ❤ Please share!

10/28/2024

Oh, poor baby! Just looking at her face makes me want to cry. We have no idea what happened to this sweet girl to cause her so much pain, but we can guess a little bit of her backstory. It's long, so bear with me:

On October 6th, a little brown tabby was found on a property in the county, all by himself. He was quite friendly and cuddly, so where he came from was a bit of a mystery! "Reuben" was brought to SCSCR, and we assessed him and sent him to a foster home with other kittens his age.

Many days later, on October 18th, we got a call from the family that found him, letting us know that a momma cat had just shown up at the house, four little kittens in tow, all resembling Reuben. We're not sure how Reuben ended up separated from his family, but based on how snuggly momma Cider and all of her kittens are, we are guessing they were all dumped on the property by someone who didn't want to deal with them.

Cider's belly was suspiciously large when she arrived, and we feared she was already pregnant. On day 2 of her stay with us, however, Cider got very sick and emptied the contents of her stomach all over the kennel. She had been eating garbage to survive. In addition to lots of plastic and paper, I can tell you her last meal before arriving was chicken fajitas with extra red and green peppers 🤢

If you've stuck around the story this long, you're probably wondering what all this has to do with the kitten in this picture! Well, another 7 days went by and we received yet another call from the family that found Reuben, Cider, and the other four kittens. This sweet, injured baby showed up at the house, looking for help. She has pretty significant damage to her face, and her right upper canine tooth was hooked onto the inside of her cheek from the damage, making it difficult for her to eat. After a vet check and a prescription for antibiotics, she came back to SCSCR to start her second chance.

I honestly wasn't sure if she belonged to Cider. She is a little larger than the other kittens, and a completely different color than any of them (they are all orange tabbies and brown tabbies). I decided to cautiously introduce her to Cider to see if she would accept her. After all, it had been a week and the kitten would now smell like infection.

Turns out I had nothing to worry about. The instant she smelled her momma, this baby dove head-first for Cider's belly and started nursing, and Cider began frantically grooming her baby and purring. You could just sense her chastising this little one with, "Where HAVE you been? You are filthy!" After a full belly and thorough bath, she then hopped down away from Cider and began playing with her siblings. Watching all of this unfold was truly a heart-warming moment to end our day at the rescue.

I know this was a long story, but thanks for sticking with it to the end! We can't wait to get all of these kittens big and healthy and find them forever homes. If you have a few dollars to spare to help us care for this new family, donations are greatly appreciated. I challenge everyone to donate $6 to this post - that's just one dollar for each member of Cider's family to help cover their vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries. If everyone can give a little, we can all make a LOT of difference ❤
