In celebration of SCSCR’s 15th birthday, we are sharing fifteen years’ worth of stories of animal resilience, unwavering humanity, and radical generosity throughout the month of December. Today's story comes from 2022.
In 2022, SCSCR took in dozens of cats from a colony in Clearmont, WY. None were spayed or neutered, and all were related—an entire extended feline family. Among them were three heavily pregnant females who were so bonded that we housed them together in a large double kennel. As we got to know them, it became clear that the torbie, Chia, was the matriarch, and the two orange girls, Cheer and Cheebs, were her daughters.
Cheer was the first to go into labor, delivering five beautiful kittens. A terrified first-time mom, she called out to her own mother, Chia, with each contraction. Chia was right by her side, comforting her through the entire labor and even helping clean the newborns as they arrived. Two days later, both Chia and Cheebs went into labor, bringing 10 more kittens into the world for a total of 15!
We were present for every birth, carefully tracking which kittens belonged to which momma. But that detail quickly became unnecessary, as all three mothers nursed and cared for the kittens indiscriminately. Cheer and Cheebs, under Chia’s watchful guidance, blossomed into confident and attentive mothers.
That summer was a whirlwind of orange fluff, tiny paws, and growing personalities. Watching the trio of moms raise their babies together was a joy, and each kitten left a lasting impression. By the end of the summer, all 15 kittens had found loving homes, and by the end of the year, so had Chia, Cheer, and Cheebs.
We’ll never forget our Summer of Orange—a special crew of moms and babies who reminded us of the power of family, love, and teamwork.
Stay with us this December as we celebrate 15 years of unforgettable stories like Chia, Cheer, Cheebs, and their kittens—tales of resilience, connection, and the second chances every an
The queen has spoken! Come visit Suzie Q tomorrow, October 26th, between 1-3pm for Trick or Treat! She can't wait to see your costumes and show off hers!
Hello amazing supporters! We are a little overwhelmed and could use your support. We currently have 153 cats and kittens in the building, several kittens in foster, and we just received a request from someone in the county to remove 16 cats and kittens of various ages from their property. We are low on food, low on funds, and low on energy!
Our biggest need right now is canned kitten food, especially Royal Canin kitten "thin slices in gravy", which can be found on our wish list at sheridancatrescue.org/chewy. Anything else on the wish list is also greatly appreciated, but this particular one is perfect for weaning kittens!
Any donations you can send our way are also immensly appreciated right now. Vet bills, cat food, cleaning supplies, and rent all add quickly and we could use some extra funds to get us through until our next big fundraiser next month! You can donate directly through Facebook/Instagram, or by visiting sheridancatrescue.org/donate.
Finally, if you live locally, we could really use some cleaning volunteers! If you can come scoop litterboxes on your lunch break or fold some laundry and do the dishes on your day off, please complete an application at sheridancatrescue.org/volunteer, or stop by to chat with us!
Another quick way to help is to comment and share this post so more people see it! Thank you all so much for your continuous support and love for our cats. We appreciate you more than you will ever know!
Happy Adoption Day, Libby! You deserve all the love and happiness in the world 🥰
Grass fire near Second Chance Sheridan Cat Rescue in Sheridan, WY, on July 18, 2024
We had a scary afternoon (July 18, 2024) as this grass fire started to get a little too close for comfort! This video was taken from our parking lot and ended up even closer before being extinguished. We want to extend an enormous thank you to all of the first responders who worked so diligently to keep everyone safe, and also to all of our staff and volunteers who came up to be on hand for animal evacuations if it became necessary. We are all safe and sound, and very grateful!
Meet Trudie! This beautiful cat came from another shelter who thought she was a senior cat because she was unable to jump or even walk without significant difficulty. In reality, Trudie is only 7 months old and was born with a malformed hip joint. Every time Trudie tries to walk with her left hind leg, she experiences horrible pain. This means this sweet kitten has never been able to run or play.
As I am writing this, Trudie is being prepped for surgery by our friends at Best Friends Animal Hospital in Billings, MT. She will be getting a femoral head osteotomy, which will remove the the head of the femur bone that fits into the cup of the pelvis. This will cause the creation of a false joint and allow Trudie to live pain-free! The surgery and post-operative care will cost over $2,000. We are so very grateful to our friends at Inside Voice for providing a $400 grant to Trudie's care, but we need your help to make up the rest!
Today is #WyoGives, and when we reach our goal of $50,000, we are eligible for a gift up to $10,000 from the Hughes Charitable Foundation! Please help us reach our goal and continue to help cats like Trudie. Her second chance begins today! Donate at https://sheridancatrescue.org/wyogives
If Trudie's story has inspired you to give, mention her in your donation memo - she might send you a thank you note!
UPDATE: WyoGives has ended, but I've added a donation button to this post if you would like to donate to Trudie's care!
I'm winning over Momma Jazz one lick of Churu at a time 😉 Razzle, Dazzle, Zazzle, and Snazzle are 14 days old today (well, I guess Snazzle is only 10 days old, but she already weighs more than her two sisters!). All babies are doing well and Jazz is taking great care of them. We are so glad we can be here to help this precious little family ❤️
Every kitten season comes with a surprise, and this year, it was Jazz! We got a call on Sunday that a feral cat had given birth under someone's porch. She must have known she needed help, because even though she had never let people touch her before, she went to the door of the people that had been feeding her, and cried until they came outside. She then led them to her newborn kittens under the porch, and waited for help. They loaded her and her babies into a carrier, and brought them to Second Chance.
We noticed right away that Jazz had an eye infection and overall looked like she didn't feel well. She wasn't cleaning her babies and wasn't really letting them nurse. We got her settled in a nice dark and quiet kennel and started antibiotics. Within a few hours, she had relaxed and started caring for her little ones. Over the next 48 hours, however, it still seems as though Jazz was not feeling well and was very uncomfortable. We were worried that she might have a retained placenta or worse, a retained fetus that was nonviable.
But four days after giving birth to her first three kittens (Razzle, Dazzle, and Zazzle), out popped a FOURTH healthy baby, Snazzle! She is the little tabby in the video that is fighting her way to what is apparently the best nursing spot. She is a little smaller than her siblings, but is quite spirited and growing like a weed. Jazz is now much more comfortable (despite her kiddos fighting over her belly) and is well on her way to being a happy and healthy mom. She has been so good about letting us give her medication and eye drops, so we are really hoping that we will be able to fully socialize her and find her a loving home!
Josie's beautiful babies are already 12 days old! All six are girls (yes, even the orange ones)! Josie is a wonderful momma and we are so excited to watch her kittens grow over the next few weeks!
Please join us in welcoming our newest special-needs baby ❤️
