This is a great explanation as to why brachycephalic breeds such as French Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, etc., struggle with breathing in heat like we're experiencing now.

Something to keep in mind! π·πͺ»πΉ
Next week is Valentineβs Day π and the U.S. alone is estimated to spend over $2 billion on flowers, many of which can be seriously toxic to our cats and dogs. Before you buy that beautiful bouquet for someone with pets, stop and check that youβre not accidentally gifting them something dangerous β their pets will thank you for it!

UPDATE: RESCUED BY PALS FOR PAWS!
This little sweetie is Clarice. She's a stray who wasn't claimed. I'm not sure of her age but she seems pretty young. Clarice didn't want to pose for me much, as she kept crawling on my lap for hugs and kisses. She weighs 23 pounds (full grown) and is absolutely adorable! She is so scared at the shelter, and she deserves a loving home. She loves walks and people, BUT she needs to get used to new people. She gets overwhelmed easily. She hasn't been tested with other dogs or cats yet, but if you are interested in her, the staff can do that. If you would like to meet Clarice, please email the shelter at [email protected] and request an application!

Definitely keeping our boys in the house more this week, and keeping them busy with treat-filled Kongs, peanut butter bones and simple obedience practicing like sit-stays, down to stands, etc.
What are you doing to keep your dogs warm, but also not so bored?

What's the first thing you do when you discover your dog is lost? This is a great timeline of what to do:
Xena was surrendered to the shelter when her family lost their home. She was so confused to be in a cage, and it's not her favorite place to be. She is a climber and can jump very high so she will need to be leash walked for exercise unless she is being watched. Xena is very sweet and walks well on a leash. She's a great medium size and has the most beautiful and softest coat. She is very dog selective and would need to meet any dogs sharing her space. She has a lot of energy so she would love an active family! If you would like to meet Xena, please email the shelter at [email protected] and request an application!

Welcome to 2024!!!
What are your dog owning/training/loving goals for the new year?
How can I help?
12/29/2023
Did you know: Erin used to be a volunteer with a Search and Rescue group in Central Indiana? She worked with her first K-9, Tori, a female Bloodhound doing SAR work prior to becoming a member of the Sheridan Police Department (while also working as a 911 dispatcher). Training search and rescue meant many long hours, but it was fulfilling to watch her dog use her natural talents.
While some might think itβs police K9 units that accept the call, itβs really volunteer dog lovers with a dedication to serviceβlike those with Chesapeake Search Dogs.

The main part of my job isn't necessarily to train the dog, but to train the owners to help work with their dog and achieve the goals they have set for themselves. So, when I receive praise like this, it's the best compliment I could ever receive!

A little Christmasy for us as we near the holiday:
"If it wasnβt for Max, the Grinchβs heart wouldnβt just be too small. It wouldnβt exist. The Grinch does love the dog. Heβs just not that open about that love. But you can see there is someone in there.
Maybe it's just that Max is a good dog. But in the film and his own feature, Max shows that there must be some good in the Grinch under all those crusty layers.
Max sees something the audience is not seeing. He knows this guy..."
-Mosier
What kind of dog is Max?πΆ
The 2000 film starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch featured Max as played by six different mixed-breed dogs, all of whom were rescued from shelters. In colloquial terms, this makes Max a βmutt.β Some dog experts have suggested that Max partially resembles a beagle, dachshund, or terrier mix.

Update on training sessions.
We are back! Starting January 6, 2023 FK9 is back to training!
Remember me introducing MacIntosh with the Paw Pals of Clinton County Humane Society? Here's a short inside look at what Erin had to say about how she wanted to work with his owners to help him adjust and be a more comfortable member of the family.
The weather finally stayed dry enough for our Intro to Agility Class tonight! Great job by Nicole & Scout and Cindi & Birdie with the new challenges!
Tatum says it best:
Tonight was the first night of agility classes here at Frontier K9! Miss Lillian has been with Frontier K9 for awhile now working on her obedience. Her owner, Nicole Stanley Mitchell wanted to have something her and Lillian could do just them. I think this is the perfect thing! In just one lesson, Lillian has figured out the tunnel!
If you or anyone you know wants to join agility, send us a message. If you havenβt trained with Erin before, a $50 evaluation will be required to make sure you and your pup's off lead obedience is satisfactory.
Erin Dean grew up in a family of dog breeders and professional handlers, blessed with experience with multiple breeds of dogs, from purebred to mixed. She has recently retired from active duty as a police K9 reserve officer, after serving the communities of Sheridan and Kirklin, Indiana. Now, she wants to share her love of dogs and help your pet become a best friend that can lead to a long, happy relationship together.
Any and all training sessions start with an initial evaluation, done at your home. Erin will spend one hour with you and your dog, learn about what you would like to accomplish and learn about the background of your relationship. After evaluations, she will then discuss with you a plan for action, whether it be via group lessons or private lessons, either at your home or (weather dependent) at Erinβs outdoor choosing.
From Erin:
Hi everyone and welcome to Frontier K9! Thank you for taking the time to like and follow my page. I thought Iβd introduce myself and give a little background for anyone who doesnβt know me.
My name is Erin Dean and Iβm definitely a dog lover. I am a fifth generation dog handler, with a long line of professional breeders, handlers, trainers and judges in my family background. For the first few years of my life, I grew up at dog shows, training schools and yes in a kennel. My parents owned Frontier Kennels which is the reason I chose the name of Frontier K9, and my grandparents owned Sun Dance Kennels. I grew up mostly around Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Silky Terriers and English Cockers. But working in my grandmaβs kennel and as a vet assistant, I have been exposed to a multitude of breeds. Iβve owned Goldenβs, German Shepherds, Australian Cattle Dogs, a Bloodhound, Spinone Italiano, and most recently Belgian Malinois. I was a police K-9 handler for 12 years and started out in Search and Recovery before that. I trained both of my partners myself with the help of some great trainers and handlers.
I firmly believe that obedience is the foundation of everything you do with your best friend. It doesnβt matter if itβs just going for runs, doing Schutzhund, scent work, agility or dock diving. You have to have a good foundation of trust and obedience to make your team be a team. I believe in positive reinforcement and that learning for the dog and the handler/owner should be fun and a game. My goal is to make you and your dog a team and show you just how great your best friend can be.
Please feel free to contact me either here, text, phone call, email or messenger. I look forward to helping you and your best friend be better together!
