We had a great time at our May 18-19 nosework trial. Unfortunately, no one took photos. On Saturday we did interior searches in the classrooms and meeting rooms at First Presbyterian Church. Three of my dogs competed. There are 5 different levels, and you can only enter one dog in each level. We have one trial in the morning and a second one in the afternoon, so if your dog passes both searches it earns the title. The easiest search is Novice; Advanced is a little harder; Superior is harder; and Masters is quite a bit harder. Elite is much the hardest as you never know how many hides there will be (from 1-4), so you have to say “Finish” when you think your dog has found everything, and people often call it too soon and thus flunk. Spirit got her Master Interiors title at this trial, so next time she’ll be in that tough – but fun – elite class.

Lovely competed in Novice Interiors and Mercy competed in Advanced Interiors. Both got their titles. Way to go, girls! Next time the young dogs can start their competition careers.

On Sunday, we were at the M&M’s Ice Rink. We had two different classes: Containers and Handler Discrimination. The Containers class consists of a bunch of cardboard boxes – the difficulty (number of boxes and hides to find) increases as you go up in the levels. When you get to the upper levels, the boxes are arranged in weird ways so it’s hard to remember which hide you found already or what group of boxes you haven’t searched. The girls did fantastic – Spirit got her Master Containers title, Mercy got her Superior Containers title, and Hopeful got her Advanced Containers title.

This was Justice’s first trial; he was in Novice Containers. He did well in the morning trial and qualified, but as we were waiting to compete in the afternoon trial, a woman cut too close behind us as she passed and her dog bumped Justice, scaring both of us since we were watching all the teams in front of us to be sure Justice stayed calm in a very exciting atmosphere. He thought he was being attacked and turned around to protect himself. Neither dog was hurt, but that behavior is not allowed so I put him back in the car and scratched him from competition. I was VERY disappointed, especially because he may now think that trials are dangerous. I have put Justice in an obedience class to help him practice being close to strange dogs and forget to expect to be attacked. I sure hope he forgets the incident before our October nosework trial.

Spirit and Hopeful also competed in a new class: Handler Discrimination. In this class, instead of searching for certain scents, the dogs search for the box containing one of my gloves. Hopeful competed in Novice HD, where none of the 11 other boxes has a glove. Spirit competed in Advanced HD, in which one box has my glove and the other boxes have gloves scented by the judge. Both got their titles. Good girls!

Hopeful also completed her 100th therapy dog visit, but the activity staff haven't happened to take photos during her visits. I have new nosework photos of her: https://celhaus.com/our-family/hopeful/

Our Story

European working lines. Bred for health, athleticism, vigor, trainability, outgoing & confident temperament and joy of life. Home raised. Well socialized. Excellent for Search & Rescue; therapy dogs; service dogs; agility, nose work, tracking & other competitions. Parents are therapy dogs, extensively health screened, always in training in various venues (mainly agility and nosework) to prove that they have the qualities that make the German Shepherd Dog the premier working dog in the world. AKC Breeder of Merit. 307-674-4800, [email protected]. www.celhaus.com. On my website I have a detailed, illustrated explanation of how I raise my puppies from birth until they leave here. During their first year, I send updates to their buyers every 3 months, listing what they should be learning and offering suggestions for any problems that might occur at that stage. the second year, I send mailings every 6 months. then I follow the pups all their lives and am always available for advice and to give support, so that the puppy grows up to be a great canine citizen and a joy to its family and all who know it, whether it is a serious working dog or a family companion. Breeding GOOD German Shepherds is a passion for me, not a business. I had my first litter in 1977 and have developed a strong female line which is in its 6th generation.
