Heath x Reba
Who would have thought? Normally, as female dogs age their litter sizes tend to go down. When I decided that I was going to do a repeat breeding between Reba and Heath I figured since her last litter was large (9 pups) this one would be around 7-8, maybe less and I would have been fine with that. As I watched her grow during her pregnancy, I knew that she had gotten pretty big, but little did I know she was carrying 12 pups!
This past Thursday night she started acting like she was in labor, so I was up with her off and on all night waiting on that first pup to show up. By the next morning, nothing had happened so off we go to the vet with the intention of having a C-Section. Well, Miss Reba must have heard she was going to get cut open as she surprised us all again by delivering that first pup before she could make it to the operating table. At that point, we just decided to let her do her thing and she ended up having all 12 pups throughout the day at the vet's office with no surgical assistance. Unfortunately, two were still born, but she still has 10 remaining and that's going to keep her quite busy in the coming weeks!
Mama and babies have survived that first crucial couple of days, but we are not out of the woods yet as the pups are still very young. Miss Reba seems to have recovered very well from the miserable 24-hours pre and post-delivery. Tails and dew claws are coming off tomorrow and then it's time to set back and watch them grow.
At this time, I have several uncommitted male pups, so if you are looking for a male Boykin with a solid field pedigree and all the recommended health and genetic testing as required by the Boykin Spaniel Society, reach out to me and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. These pups will be ready to go to their new homes by Memorial weekend, which would be perfect for someone wanting to have the summer months to get their pup acclimated to water.
