Annual horse care isn't just about vaccines and exams. Dental exams are a critical part of a horses long term health and odontoplasty (floating) if needed. Dr. Grillo is always happy to help our patients out with this and loves showing our clients exactly whats going on in their horses mouth so they understand their future needs better!
She also can make sure they are microchipped like this beautiful mare so they never get lost. Remember you can microchip not just dogs and cats, but also horses and goats to ensure their safe return home to you if anything happens.

Dr Sam Hoover (NC State 2025) launched us off for the summer and we can't wait to see what a kick ass doctor she will become in the future! We didn't get any pictures with the horses we got her with unfortunately but she got to practice with horses, goats, dogs, cats and chickens, as well as crank out a bunch of solo surgery!

IMPORTANT HEALTH NOTICE FOR YOUR DOGS!

Here at SBF you know we are committed to your furry friends health and wellness. As such we wanted to bring your attention to a recent increase in cases of canine infectious respiratory disease being seen across the country. So what can you do to keep them happy and healthy?

🐾 Prevention is Key: Vaccination Matters!
We strongly recommend that all dog owners ensure their canine companions are up-to-date on vaccinations, including Bordetella and Canine Influenza. These vaccines are crucial in protecting your furry family members from respiratory diseases that can spread easily in places where dogs gather. This means grooming, boarding, dog parks, and even family vacations/get togethers that include our four footed friends. If you aren't sure of their vaccination status or want to get it boostered please contact SBF Vet at (877) 793-3383.

🚫 Preventive Measures: Avoid High-Risk Situations
To further protect your pets, we advise avoiding situations where dogs come into close contact, such as boarding facilities, dog parks, and other places with high dog traffic. While socialization is essential, minimizing exposure to potential sources of infection can greatly reduce the risk of respiratory diseases.

Practice Good Hygiene
Just like with humans, good hygiene practices are essential for preventing the spread of infectious diseases among dogs. Regularly wash your dog's food and water bowls, clean their toys, and be mindful of shared items in communal spaces.

Monitor Your Dog's Health
Keep a close eye on your dog's overall health and behavior. If you notice any signs of respiratory distress, coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge, please contact us promptly. Early detection and intervention can make a significant difference in your pet's recovery. We are trying to ensure we have small slot availability for quick drop in appts at our barn weekly to ensure prompt care for this specific issue.

As always, we hope to only see your babies for health and routine wellness- but if you ever have questions or concerns don't hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely
Dr Shelby Grillo and SBF Staff

Attention: We will be closed for Thanksgiving Break as Dr Grillo will be out of town with family. Monday (20th) and Tuesday (21st) we will have staff available through the phone, for laser therapy, and to get you medications, but Wed the 22nd thru Sunday the 26th our office will be completely closed to also allow staff time with their families.
Please make sure to get in all medication and appointment requests well in advance if you need anything for your pets. Non emergent messages/texts left for us while we are closed will not be answered until the 27th.
We have excellent coverage for large animal emergencies which will be available ONLY for existing up to date large animal patients, but while we are closed those are the only voicemails/texts that will be answered. Make sure to leave us detailed information should you find your large animal in an emergent situation as non descript messages will not be answered until we are open.

Swollen Eye- what to do until the Vet arrives
THIS IS ALWAYS CONSIDERED AN EMERGENCY AND YOUR VET SHOULD BE CONTACTED EVERY TIME IMMEDIATELY!

Carefully halter and hold the horse so they cannot rub their eye on anything. Rubbing the eye can worsen the condition especially if there is a foreign object in the eye.
If the horse will allow you gently pry open the eye lids and look for a foreign object- do not remove if you see one wit for your veterinarian. Gently press around the eye, head and poll to look for tenderness.

Laminitis- What to do until your vet gets there
When the seasons change our beloved 4 hooves friends are at risk for laminitis, which can lead to founder- a life threatening disease.

What to do
- keep the horse as still as possible. Ideally encourage them to lie down.
- ice the feet. This can be done by standing them in a bucket of ice water, using Jacks Ice boots, or tying sleeves of ice around the pasterns. Try to keep their feet cold until the vet arrives. Cooling the blood going down to the foot/the foot itself will help decrease the inflammation in the lamina itself.
- take the horses temperature- let your veterinarian know what the temperature is as this can help determine the cause of the laminitis.
- locate an area with good footing: ideally deep bedding (6 to 8 inches) is ideal. This both packs into the bottom of the foot provides support as well as letting them sink their toes down and relieve pressure from the deep digital flexor tendon pulling on the bottom surface of the coffin bone. Sand and fine shavings work well as do EDSS pads (high density foam pads).

Make sure you have access to a power plug for your veterinarian as radiographs will be highly recommended to stage your horses laminitis..

If you notice any signs of lameness, unwillingness to move, heat in the feet, or your horse laying down more, please don't hesitate to call or text us at (877) 793-3383 ASAP. The sooner this disease is treated, the better.

What to do until your vet arrives- Large Laceration

1. keep the horse calm, slow the bleeding and scope out a good area for your vet to work on your horse. this may include somewhere the horse can be laid down under sedation depending on where the wound is. Make sure it is dry with good lighting

IMMEDIATELY
1. apply pressure to stop bleeding- you can use a clean cloth/towel/shirt/saddle pad, whatever is handy, to press to the wound firmly but gently or tie around the wound. If this becomes soaked with blood, place another over it. DO NOT TORNIQUET unless instructed to.
2. move your horse to a good treatment area: quiet, well lit, clear of obstacles and debris, ideally access to running water. Do not try and move them if you cannot control the bleeding.

After your horse is safe
1. make an initial inspection and send your vet pictures ASAP. gently rinse the area with cold water. keep the pressure low and do not aim it directly into the wound so as to not push debris farther into it.
2. Look for foreign Objects: small sticks, gravel and other objects stuck in the wound can complicate stall healing. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE IT YOURSELF. Look over your horse for other injuries like small punctures- these can heal over quickly but seal and trap bacteria under the skin.

Call your veterinarian if
-the bleeding worsens or does not appear to be stopping at all
- the horse is significantly lame or unwilling to move
- the horse becomes lethargic, shocky or otherwise mentally unstable

Understanding Equine Metabolic Disorders- does my horse have Cushings, Insulin Resistance or Equine Metabolic Syndrome??

Equine Metabolic Syndrome- occurs when endocrine and metabolic abnormalities continue, often resulting in laminitis. This condition affects the blood concentrations of the hormone Insulin, which the pancreas releases in response to meal and functions in a normal horse to signal body cells to take up and store blood sugar for later use

PPID (Cushings)- With this disease the pituitary gland becomes enlarged, releasing excessive amounts of a hormone ACTH and other pituitary hormones that can signal the adrenal glands to produce cortisol- the stress hormone. It can also cause the tell-tale characteristic signs of Cushings like excessive long, non-shedding hair and abnormal fat deposits.

Insulin Dysregulation- the body either has increased insulin release, decreased insulin clearance, insulin resistance or a mix of all 3. These lead to the body having a very high concentration of blood insulin

If you are concerned your horse is suffering metabolic disease, there is testing SBF can do to help you narrow it down, then make the best treatment plan possible. Feel free to call or text with questions about your horse to (877) 793-3383

Respiratory Distress- what to do until the Vet Arrives

the first and most important thing you can do is to get the horse fresh air ASAP. Then monitor his vital signs as you wait for your vet. A normal respiratory rate is 12 to 20 breaths per minute- this can be seen by watching their abdomen or chest move.

Immediately
- check their nose. Most cases are due to Heaves/asthma but breathing can also be hindered by insect sting, snake bite, allergic reaction or injury to the nose. If the horses nose appears to be swollen or if they are bleeding from one of both nostrils alert your vet ASAP.
- keep the horse quiet and still. excitement and exercise will make breathing harder. Bring them a friend to keep them company if needed. do NOT give sedatives or tranquilizers unless directly instructed by your vet- these can further hinder their respiration.
- get them outside away from stall dust or an arena to an open grassy area or dust free parking lot. This is only not the case if your animal has pasture induced heaves or there is heavy smoke- in which case bring them inside away from pollen, grass, and smoke. You can even use an air purifier.
- monitor their vital signs, check the color of their gums- very pale or bluish mucous membranes indicate very low oxygen levels and is a dire emergency.
- if you can get them somewhere dust free and air conditioned/ temperature controlled that can help significantly as it is easier to breathe- like a garage.

Call your vet IMMEDIATELY if the respiratory rate increases, the mucous membranes are bluish or pale, or if they begin to panic.

When in doubt call or text us at (877) 793-3383

A couple announcements for all our wonderful clients:
1. Our bus will be getting a new engine next week and as such will be out of commission Monday thru Wednesday. We will still be offering LARGE ANIMAL emergency help, but all other appointments will be scheduled for when we have it back. We are currently accepting appointments for next Friday with the hopes we have it back. If we do not- we will come out in the suburban but may be limited in our abilities.
2. Due to short staffing- we will not be seeing appointments on Wednesdays to allow the team some rest. Phones will still be active in order to assist you and schedule you as needed, but again, these days will only be available for large animal emergencies.
3. To qualify for large animal emergency service your animal must be up to date with our clinic- meaning they have been examined in the last 12 months.
4. Due to short staffing please allow 48 hours for medication refills. This means if you are getting low on your animals medication, please let us know BEFORE it runs out so we can get it together for you.
5. As we train new employees and make sure they are up to the standards we expect for your fur babies we will be putting a pause on small animal surgeries. We will let you know when that service can resume.
As always, we can't wait to see you and your animals (hopefully just for happy healthy stuff), but please let us know if you ever have any questions/comments/concerns! We are only a call or text away. (877) 793-3383
