This is a picture of a Cuterebra larva we removed from a patient yesterday! Cats and dogs are accidental hosts for this parasite and they can cause pain and swelling of the skin in the head and neck region. They can be challenging to remove due their large number of spines that help keep them imbedded in the skin of their host. Thankfully, this larva was removed completely! 🐛🐶🐱

The smoky haze from the Canadian wildfires has pet owners wondering how to protect their companion animals. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), if you're feeling the effects of the poor air quality, your pets are likely feeling it, too. Although our area is not as significantly impacted as other areas of the country, the following precautions can help keep pets safe.

🏠 Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
🪟 Keep windows and doors shut.
⏱️ Take dogs outside only for quick relief walks; avoid intense outdoor activity.
🦜 Birds are especially vulnerable and should not be allowed outside.
🫁 Older animals, pets with heart or breathing conditions, and flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds like pugs and bulldogs may be more affected.
🚨 Contact your veterinarian if your pet is coughing, gagging, or having trouble breathing.
