It's time to paws and celebrate National Tabby Day. April 30 is National Tabby Day – a day dedicated to celebrating our beloved and unique striped feline friends! Did you know that tabby cats are not a specific breed, but rather a coat pattern that can be found in different breeds? These adorable kitties have been popular throughout history, even appearing in ancient Egyptian art. Whether you have a tabby cat or simply admire them from afar, this is the perfect day to shower them with love and attention. So let's give our furry friends some extra treats and cuddles on this special holiday!

Cat lovers have all been there. That onerous sound their cat makes when a hairball is on the rise. On the last Friday in April, National Hairball Awareness Day draws attention to a problem many cat lovers face.

The formation of hairballs is a common feline condition that is brought on by self-grooming and the associated ingestion of hair. Cats pass the hair through their digestive tract or will vomit the hairball. If they don't eliminate the hairball from their digestive track one way or the other, hairballs can create an obstruction. Obstructions can cause serious medical issues for a cat.

Here are someTips for Managing Hairballs:

1) Regular grooming helps reduce the amount of hair your cat ingests. Bushing your cat every day also has the added benefits of reducing the amount of shed hair around the house and offers your cat some extra attention.
2) Look for products that help to prevent hairballs. Shampoos and wipes may reduce the amount of shedding.
3) Some types of cat food may help to reduce the amount of shedding too. Designed to improve the health of a cat's coat, the foods are nutritionally packed.

*UPDATE - Reid has a new home! Thanks to everyone who shared and participated in helping. 🙂

Reid is an amazing boy! He is approximately 2 -3 years old current on vacations and heartworm negative. He is fully house trained , knows basic commands , is a big couch potato, but at the same time loves going for walks and playing in the yard. and he absolutely loves to give and receive love. He would love to be the sole focus of your attention as the only fur kid, but with proper introduction would warm up to having fur siblings. He is great with women and school aged children, but is Leary with smaller kids who do not understand boundaries and men( once he realises men are not going to hit him he warms right up). The right family will be so happy the brought him home! To meet Reid or if you know of a rescue that could pull him please contact the A*O 361-401-9439.

Megan is amazing! She is always so helpful with pets in the shelter who need a little help to make them the best! Today she brought two of her own pups to meet Reid. Since I don’t have a shelter full of dogs he hasn’t had the opportunity to be around other dogs. He was a little reluctant at first but warmed up. Videos and pics in comments. If your looking for help with your new puppy or having trouble with a longtime family pet she is your girl.

Unfortunately this boy is back in the shelter. “Reid” is approximately 2 years old, neutered, current on vaccinations, and heartworm negative. This is what the previous adoptee had to say, He was good with our older kids he liked running and playing in the yard, fully house trained, and a big snuggle bunny. His down side is he is skiddish of men and doesn’t understand the energy and constant need of my littles. “otherwise he is perfect! He even went to the baseball fields on Friday and loved everyone!”
Reid would do well in a home with older kids or a home where littles came for visits only. He will need time to adjust to men and the man of the house will need to have a patience and a gentle hand. Please share to help find this sweet boy his pawfect furever home. The shelter is not a place for a dog to learn that not everyone is mean. He needs to be in a home where he can grown and learn. If you are interested in meeting , adopting, or fostering please reach out or if you know of a rescue who would be able to pull him please have them contact me as well. The last thing I want is for him to sit in the shelter or worse.

Get ready to celebrate National Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day today April 21! This special day was created to honor one of the most beloved dog breeds in the world, and it's a great opportunity for pet owners and animal lovers alike to appreciate their furry companions. Bulldogs are known for being loyal, protective, sweet-natured animals that can make wonderful additions to any family. Here are a few fun facts:

1)Bulldogs Were Originally Breed for Courage and Tenacity. Their name literally suggests their role of “bull baiter”. After the cruel sport was banned in England in 1835, breeders redefined the Bulldog's purpose of being a loving, gentle family pet.

2) Bulldogs are Known for their Signature "Smile". Those adorable wrinkles and folds are not just for show! They provide an anatomical advantage and contribute to the signature "bulldog smile".

3) Bulldogs are the 5th most popular dog breed in the U.S. According to the American Kennel Club, Bulldogs rank 5th in popularity out of 195 dog breeds, signifying their widespread appeal among pet owners.

4) Bulldogs have a Specific Type of Birth. Due to their unique body and head size, nearly 80% of bulldogs are delivered through Cesarean section to ensure the safety of both mother and pups.

5) The Canine Lifespan of Bulldogs is Generally Shorter. Although every dog is different, on average, Bulldogs have a shorter lifespan ranging from 8 – 10 years, underscoring the importance of cherishing every moment with these gorgeous companions.

April 17 - 23 is national pet ID week. 1 in 3 pets will go missing in their lifetime so this week was designated by animal care professionals to help promote proper pet identification.

The following are tips to help keep your pet safe:

1) Make sure your pet always wears a collar with a current ID tag and or rabies tag.
2) Include a contact name, address and phone number on all ID tags.
3) Keep your pet’s licenses, ID tag and microchip current – make sure to update the tag if you change your address or phone number.
4) If you are traveling, put a temporary tag on your pet with the contact information of someone who knows how to reach you.
5) Tag your cats even if you never let them outside. They could slip through an open door and quickly become lost in the neighborhood.
6) Take the added security precaution of having your pet microchipped. Microchipping provides an additional layer of protection in the event the pet’s collar and tag fall off or are removed. All animal shelters across the country scan every animal upon intake for the presence of a microchip.

Shiner Animal Services offers microchips for pets at a cost of only $10.00. If you are interested in having your pet microchiped simply call the A*O at 361-401-9439 to set up an appointment. Having your pet microchipped almost always saves them a trip to the shelter because we are able to scan them in the field and make contact with you right away.

Did you know that today, March 13 is K-9 Veterans Day. On this day, K-9 breeders and handlers honor the service of their furry companions. K-9s serve vital roles in the military and law enforcement. They get embedded in border patrol and customs, airports, the Coast Guard, the F.B.I., the police, and even the Secret Service. This holiday also recognizes other service dogs that help people with disabilities and support animals for those with mental health issues. Service dogs often risk their health and lives to accomplish their missions. It’s only fair that we should celebrate their efforts at least once a year.

We are officially in Daylight savings time , and that means spring and warmer temperatures are just around the corner. Many pet owners will be wanting to give their furry friends more outside time. This is great! We all love to soak up the sun! Before you put your dog outside alone make sure you remember that The Safe Outdoor Dogs Act has specific rules that must be followed when leaving your dog outside and unattended. This law, which went into effect in January of 2022 defines adequate shelter to protect dogs from extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and standing water. Please keep your pets safe and make sure you are meeting these requirements when leaving your dog outside unattended. For more information on this law you can visit the Texas Humane Legislation Network at thln.org
