March 16th through the 22nd is Animal Poison Prevention Week! With spring also around the corner and Easter on its way, it's the perfect time to share our favorite infographic: identifying poisonous lilies.

All members of the Lilium family, along with Daylilies, are extremely toxic to cats. Even grooming the pollen off their fur or drinking water from a vase with cut lilies in it can cause acute, irreversible kidney failure. If you believe your cat may have been exposed to lilies, immediate vet care is essential for the best possible outcome. We always recommend bringing the offending plant with you to the appointment - being able to identify if it is a true lily versus a lily-type flower can help with a treatment plan!

Today is World Spay Day! Spaying and neutering your cat has a large range of benefits. Spaying ends heat cycles, removes any risk of ovarian or uterine cancer, and prevents pyometra (a serious bacterial infection in the uterus). Neutering helps alleviate spraying, reduces territorial behavior, and removes any risk of testicular cancer. Plus, it helps lower the population of homeless and unwanted pets!

It's February, which means it's Dental Health Month! Did you know the majority of a cat's tooth is beneath the surface of the gum tissue? We visually check your kitty's teeth at every exam, but this hidden disease is why dental radiographs are so important!

This is Ziggy, who lives with our LVT Nicole. At her annual exam, Dr. Elliot noted Ziggy had some mild to moderate calculus on her teeth with heavier gingivitis, and she recommended a comprehensive dental procedure. During her dental, Dr. Perkins did full mouth radiographs - which we do for each and every dental procedure here. These x-rays help us find hidden dental disease, and in Ziggy's case, she had a mouthful - literally! It turns out every single one of Ziggy's teeth was heavily diseased, and she had them all removed during the procedure.

Ziggy is the perfect example of why we do full mouth radiographs - before and after dental extractions - with every procedure. Without radiographs, we never would have known just how bad off poor Ziggy's mouth was.

Cats do surprisingly well without teeth, and Ziggy is no exception. The first picture shows her shortly after her Total Mouth Extraction, a little loopy on pain medications and a bit confused about her new empty mouth. However the second picture shows Ziggy less than a week later - comfortable, relaxed, happy, and PAIN FREE!

You may have heard the news of the microchip company Save This Life suddenly going out of business and deactivating their microchip directory. Cats Exclusive uses PetLink for our microchips, so if your cat was chipped with us, their information is intact. You can use the AAHA Universal Microchip Lookup (https://www.aaha.org/for-veterinary-professionals/microchip-search/) to determine which company or companies your pet's chip is registered with.

If your pet has a Save This Life chip, the chip itself still works! However, you will need to register it with a new microchip company. Unsure of your cat's chip number? Reach out to us - we may have your cat's chip number in their file!

After scanning lost pet, enter the number into the microchip registry tool to search for the manufacturer of the chip.

Starting tomorrow morning, things will be a little different at CEVC -- we'll be doing rounds!

Every morning staff will be gathering prior to appointments to discuss everything from upcoming appointments to staffing to boarding cats to new and interesting advances in veterinary medicine! This will help with our overall efficiency and ability to serve our patients and clients as well as help each other out behind the scenes.

Our doors will still open at 8:00 AM every day, and nothing will change about our posted business hours. If you don't see a receptionist when you first walk in the door, don't worry! They'll be back quickly to give you a hand.
