Bunny season is upon us! Just a few ideas for bunny protection

Tis the season for Mr. Peter Cottontail. Let's help keep Peter and his family safe this spring season. 🐰 Cottontail mothers are preparing for their babies. 🐶🐾 Dog owners are already calling us about their dog finding the bunny's nest. There are several house hold items you may already have that can keep the nest safe. A simple modification to these house hold items is all you need to do to give the momma bunny access to her babies while keeping your pet out. Add some weight on top of the container to prevent your dog out from pushing the container over. 💕

Regarding the outbreaks of respiratory illness in dogs:

Per the ISVMA, there are no confirmed cases of the syndrome in Illinois at this time.

The three clinical syndromes observed in other states are:

1. Chronic mild to moderate tracheobronchitis that lasts 6-8 weeks.
2. Chronic pneumonia that is minimally responsive to antibiotics.
3. Acute pneumonia that progresses rapidly and can lead to poor outcomes.

We will remain vigilant as this situation can change rapidly.

What can you do?
1. Limit exposure to dogs with unknown travel and vaccine history
2. Keep your dog up to date on their Bordetella and Canine flu vaccinations.
3. If your dog develops respiratory symptoms, isolate from other dogs right away and consult your veterinarian

Staring on January 1st, 2024, all intact (not neutered) pets that get vaccinated for rabies, regardless of age, will have to purchase the Rabies tag for non-neutered pets. The cost for this tag will be $40.00.

This is a change made by Will county. Previously, animals were given up to 1 year of age to be neutered before they had to buy the “non- neutered” tag.

Important information!

With Halloween right around the corner, here's a look at some tips on how to keep your pups safe this spooky season. That includes safe costumes, providing a safe space for your pets on Halloween night and avoiding chocolate candy.

One of the most common toxicities in dogs is caused by chocolate ingestion. Dogs can't metabolize chocolate in the same way people can, so keeping chocolate in a secure location out of your dog’s reach is essential.

This week is going to be a very hot one! Please make sure that outdoor pets and livestock have water and shade available. Indoor pets that go outdoors should be allowed out just long enough to use the bathroom.

Not animal health related but important information

Understand that flea control products commonly used to protect pets from fleas are not labeled for bed bugs, and because bed bugs feed primarily on people, treating pets would not be expected to be an effective form of control.
