🫏 Let's talk about hand breeding. 🫏
Since there's quite a few people who seem to think I am the devil for hand breeding horses that don't pasture breed, let's touch base on how we actually "hand breed."
Hand breeding isnt always stocks, chains, twitches, sedation, and hobbles. Some farms use that stuff, that's their business and I don't care.
We, however, do not use restraints. Horses are stood in a large open alleyway with a rope halter and lead rope. That's it. They have the option to run us over, kick the crap out of Mojo, strike, bite, etc. Guess what? They don't. If they do, they get sent home.
The horses that don't want to be pasture bred OR hand bred get sent home. If they kick, bite, or strike, they get sent home. If they try to run us over or won't stand, they get sent home. I sure do love breeding and love being able to help someone get their dream mule out of their personal mare but I don't want to work that hard or force someone's mare who doesn't want to be bred. I have plenty of my own mares who are happy to carry foals to worry about.
If another farm wants to, again I don't care, it's not my business. But this is how we do things and hand breeding isn't as "inhumane" as you think it is.
Picture is of the client mare who hip-checked Mojo in the previous reel. Notice no restraints. And also, she loves being a Momma and is very attentive.
