Emellio transitioned on to whatever is next, tonight. Found him when I got home from work. Nothing has changed in his life for many many months. I don't know why he needed to leave. He was more Chippy's companion than my pet. But he should have been around a lot longer, he was only 2 ³/⁴ yrs old. And vaccinated. And showed no signs of any illness. Just p**f. Gone.
Emelio Earhardt. Born Jan/2021, passed Sept/2023. Our little 'shark mouth.'

It has been quite long time since I lost my whole herd to RHDV-2. I love my bunnies and miss having them. Was thinking maybe I am ready to begin again. I had lost 60/65 rsbbits. And m5 property was put on State ordered quarantine for a year. That was 3 years ago. Then, I got this little rescue bunny today and just holding em for a bit lowered my blood pressure from a stressful day. Not sure of gender yet but either is fine at this point. I love lionhead rabbits, and the universe brings you what you need at the right time. I guess this little cute bunny butt is the start of my new herd.

In my observation of wild rabbits have seen regular repeated behavior that have not found documented elsewhere. Rabbit's tails do communicate danger when raised while running, but not mearly by the white underside being shown. They also will point to the direction of the threat they are escaping while running, even when they change directions.

Haven't posted about any other rabbits in a while; I downsized my collection in advance of a move. We have much more land now, but no rabbit facility. Currently only have Ralph, Chippy, and Emelio Earhart. Ralph got bored for this pic and found himself some tp fun while we were on errands. 🀣

I gotta say, I love rabbits! But...I have enough even deeper appreciation for them because I have a housebunny. His total freedom allows his whole personality to shine in a way one would never see if he was in a hutch-even with a play area. I took this pick this morning, Ralph saw me putting on my jacket, almost out the door, and he made sure to say goodbye! Doesn't happen every day, but is not uncommon either. He also jumps on our bed to say goodnight to us. He likes to go on the balcony to see the wild bunnies.... I could go on and on. Lesson I learned, to appreciate the rabbit, let it be a housebunny.

Two of my survivers, these little girls are Pete and Midnight's kids. Pete was a Lionhead, Midnight is Ralph's sister, a black doe.

Heartbreak has hit our rabbitry. We faught against the awful disease, RHVD2. We moved everybody, all 11 adults into a spare bedroom for the summer to keep our bunnies safe. I thought it had passed our area months ago, so mid Sept I began loosening my biosecurity measures and moved them into a shed I was setting up for them. I have a soft heart, and a yard FULL of delicious grass for them...and let some of them begin enjoying it again.
In the beginning of Oct I lost a batch of 14 babies. It was terribly sad and I had made a special connection with one of them. First I thought it was the virus, and we took every measure to protect our bunnies, but especially our Ralph. I (even though it could have been too late) got Ralph the vaccinated against RHVD2. Then I did more research, and chalked it up to allowing those babies to eat too much grass too fast (I had allowed them grass access for 9 days while providing pellets and hay).
Mystery solved. I thought. Until the other day... Nov 9th I had another death, Ralphina... but she had been out in the yard overnight and ate ALL of a cabbage plant that was inaccessible to her before. Cabbage isn't great for rabbits, I dont think eating a whole plant was a good idea for her, but she must have enjoyed it. She passed about 5 days after that.
After her, I found sweet Roscoe and his mate passed in their cage. :( They had a 9 babies that we took inside and began nursing. They too had gotten out recently and been eating pumpkin plant (that no other animal had touched, all season). See prior video post of them having a snow day. I still wasn't alarmed, everything still had an answer.
Leif passed, also. He had been allowed out to roam also and ate ??? Still no alarms, could be explained.
Day before yesterday, that changed when our indoor only bunny, Grey, passed. She stayed in a hutch inside so only I, Ralph, or a fly could have passed the virus to her. All of the baby bunnies we were nursing died. Sadlt one by one. I even brought inside a nursing mother (Hymdahli) to help with the babies. She didn't help at all really, and also ended up passing.
To date (including those prior babies) we have lost 28 babies and 7 adults. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I called the state vet yesterday. It was Friday, they can't be out until Monday. This continues ongoing, currently I have 5 adults left and about 25 babies, but the number of survivors goes down a couple each day.
Ralph, thank any and all deities, is ok so far. He has 100% been exposed to the virus beyond a doubt, but so far his vaccine has been proving itself. He is the sweetest rabbit ever; but I had been wanting to get him fixed so that he stops having ..territorial accidents on our blankets. It has been pointed out by a household member, who also has to deal with these accidents, that it is a good thing he hasn't been fixed yet, so his line can continue. True story Ralph, if you survive this, you still have some hu***ng to do in the future! We love your babies!
So...this isn't done yet, only about 1/2 way through. Every day, every couple of hours there is new sadness. I've begun feeling numb to the situation in a manner, which allows me to continue caring for my babies who are still out there. Who still have a chance. Maybe somebunny will survive. So many have passed, I hold out little hope for the rest, bu they still need their food, and water, and kind words, and VERY careful pets.
To date I have 5 adults still and about 25 babies. And Ralph. Ralph is doing well aside from the grief of losing his friend, Grey, and the others. I don't know how much Ralph comprehends of this, but I have seen he is grieving as well. He knows what happened with his friend, and I closed off her room for now. He has only asked to go in there one time, usually if the door is closed, that is where he is posted, waiting to go in. He has expressed his sorrow to us and has been enjoying cuddles even more and ...deeper than usual.
