Case Snapshot! 📸

Can you ‘spot’ who is in Dr. Kelsey Bailey’s hands? That’s Tuck! 🦎

Tuck is a Leopard gecko who came to us from L.E.A.R.N! 🐍🐸🦂
(Louisiana Exotic Animal Resource Network). She is estimated to be about 2 years old!

Upon exam Tuck was “spotted” with what looked to be a scab above her eye. Further examination revealed a retrobulbar mass and a retained spectacle.

*Retrobulbar Mass: a growth or lesion behind the eyeball, within the eye socket. This can be caused by various conditions.

*Retained Spectacle: (also known as retained eye caps) refers to when the scale like covering over a snake, or some lizard species, eyes does not shed properly. This can lead to cloudiness and can impair vision.

We will keep you updated as this case continues! 💛

Is your pet bumping into things more often? Vision problems can sneak up on us. Our latest blog dives into optic nerve disorders in pets, offering insights into symptoms, diagnosis, and how we can help them navigate a blurry world.

It often starts with something small. Maybe your dog hesitates at the top of the stairs. Maybe your cat misses a jump she’s made a hundred times. At first, it might seem like clumsiness, or age. But when your pet begins to show more obvious signs of vision loss, it’s natural to feel concerned. A...

Those round, dark bubbles in the eye? They’re called uveal cysts—fluid-filled sacs that can form behind the iris. While they’re often benign, in some breeds they can be linked to vision problems or even glaucoma. 🐾

Remember how we talked about keratomycosis in dogs the other day? Well, equines can get it too—and it can be just as serious. 🐴💥

Here it is presented in our equine patient we saw the other day.

Living in the South means our pets are exposed to all kinds of environmental pathogens—especially those with weakened immune systems. 🦠

This sweet pup has diabetes and developed a fungal eye infection called keratomycosis. On the cytology sample, you can actually see the fungal hyphae, and that black spot in the middle of the green fluorescein stain? That’s a fungal plaque. 👀

A great reminder of how important regular checkups and early detection are for our pets’ health! 🐾💜

Case of the Day! 🔍🐴

We saw this quarter horse at the Red River Equine Hospital today for limbal conjunctival, squamous cell carcinoma removal!

What’s that you ask? 🤨

It’s type of cancer, also known as ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN), which often presents as a white or yellow-pink nodule on the eye surface. It's a cancer that can affect the surface of the eye and can sometimes involve the limbus, which is the border between the cornea and sclera.

Dr. Pierce and Dr. Bailey were able to get this removed to help improve this horse’s quality of life!
