Although we will be open all day this 4th of July for you and your pets we would rather you enjoy your day celebrating with friends and family.

In preperation for Independence Day celebrations, it's important to take precautions to keep your pets healthy and safe before, during and after the festivities. Here are a few ideas to help y'all celebrate and be safe.

Preparing in advance:

• Make sure your pets have identification tags with up-to-date information or write on their collars their name and your phone number.

• If your pets aren’t already microchipped, talk with your veterinarian about microchipping. It helps identify and bring your pets home faster if they escape and are found by someone else.

• If your pet has anxiety, make sure that they have a safe and secure place to hide if needed during fireworks or if they need medication make sure to go to your vet to have their medication ready beforehand.

Safety during July 4 celebrations:

• Consider putting your pets in a safe, escape-proof room or crate during parties and fireworks.

• Keep your pets inside if you or your neighbors are setting off fireworks.

• Remember that too much sun, heat (and humidity!) can be dangerous to pets. Keep them inside and make sure they have access to shady spots and plenty of water when outdoors.

• Although we all enjoy our BBQ and festive foods our pets systems are not designed to tolerate such treats. Even just a little can cause belly upsets, and in some cases, more severe issues such as diarrhea and pancreatitis.

After the celebrations:

Check your yard for fireworks debris before allowing pets outside to play or relax. Even if you didn't set off fireworks yourself, debris can make its way into your yard, where curious animals may pick it up to play with or eat.

With all that in mind, go on and have an amazing 4th of July with your family and have fun!

How do you keep your pets cool during the Dog Days of Summer??

With temperatures soaring, it's crucial to be mindful of our furry friends' health. Heat stroke in pets is a serious condition that can be life-threatening. Here’s what you need to know to keep your pets safe:

What is Heat Stroke?
Heat stroke occurs when a pet's body temperature rises to a dangerous level, often due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures or excessive exercise. Sometimes heat stroke occurs on those cloudy days that seem a little cooler as well!!

Signs of Heat Stroke in Pets:

-Searching for shade is a sign that they are getting too hot, and this behavior should not be ignored
- Heavy panting and difficulty breathing
- Excessive drooling
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Weakness or lethargy
- Elevated heart rate
- Poorly responsive
- Collapse or seizures

Immediate Actions if You Suspect Heat Stroke:

1. **Move to a Cool Area**: Get your pet out of the heat and into a cooler environment.
2. **Offer Water**: Provide small amounts of cool water, but don’t force them to drink.
3. **Cool Down**: Use cool (not cold) water to wet their fur, especially on the paws, belly, and neck. Avoid using ice-cold water as it can shock their system.
4. **Visit the Vet**: Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Contact your vet immediately, even if your pet seems to recover.

Prevention Tips:

- **Never Leave Pets in Cars**: Temperatures inside a car can skyrocket in minutes, even with the windows cracked. Remember, newer cars will often turn themselves off after a set amount of time so even leaving them in a running vehicle can be dangerous.
- **Limit Exercise**: Avoid intense exercise during peak heat hours. Early morning or late evening walks are best. Out of shape pets and short-nosed dogs (brachycephalic dogs like Bulldogs) are usually less tolerant to heat.
- **Provide Shade and Water**: Ensure your pet has access to shade and plenty of fresh water when outside.
- **Be Mindful of Surfaces**: Hot pavement increases the surrounding temperatures and can burn your pet’s paws. Test the surface with your hand; if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them.

Let’s keep our pets safe and cool this summer! Share this post to spread awareness and help prevent heat stroke in pets. 🐶🐱

Stay cool this summer!!

We all want to reward our pups with treats and toys but what we choose to give them can be the difference between life and death. Bones are a common treat and said to be safe, in this instance, unfortunately, that proved to be a false belief.

Recently we had a patient come to our facility that had been vomiting, acting lethargic and showing signs of a painful abdomen. Upon physical examination from our veterinarian, we recommended x-rays to rule in or out a foreign body. The owner consented, although doubtful that their precious pet could have gotten into anything that could hurt them. However, once the X-ray was read it was noted that multiple bone fragments were present in the small intestine. The owner consented to exploratory surgery, and we removed a circular piece of bone (later id as a femoral head) and multiple large (about 2 cm long) pieces of sharp jagged bone. The bones recovered were recommended for this pet’s size and stature.

Thank goodness the owner noticed symptoms quickly, brought Margot into the clinic and allowed us to do recommended diagnostics. Without the emergency surgery performed by Dr. Jones Margot would not have lived. We are so happy and grateful to report that Margot recovered from surgery and is doing very well!!!

We always recommend checking with your primary veterinarian for the best chew toys and treats for your pets.

A few weeks ago we treated a patient that had some traumatic injuries to her pelvis. She was young, scared and in pain but so very loved by her owners!! They allowed us to do what we love and treat this pup through the weekend so she could start to mend.
Today we received a card and home made hearts to show their appreciation for us doing what we are here to do. Thank you so much for sharing your time, energy and talent!! It was unexpected but greatly cherished.

Animal Emergency Clinic was honored to be a part of the PawPrints Agility competition. Of course we were not an active part of the competition but we were able to share some of our goodies with owners and pups. We were also privileged enough to be a part of the celebration of our own Hannah Cavender ‘s mom winning the Mack title!! Her pup, on the other hand, enjoyed a piece of cake for her hard work!! Thank you for allowing us to share in this event!

So glad to hear Bennie is better!!

Truly didn’t expect to bring this hot mess home tonight or ever again when we left home this morning. Thanks to Dr. Brad and the Southern Hills Animal Hospital LLC crew for pulling off yet another Beignet miracle. Bennie’s home and begging for treats like nothing ever happened. To her long list of diagnoses, this week we’re adding acute on chronic pancreatitis, hypertensive crisis, hypertension, suspected stroke/TIA, resolved sudden blindness, & hyperlipidemia (because lets face it diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, jejunal IBD, allergies, and dry eye weren’t enough). Also thanks to the also amazing, Dr. Welch at Animal Emergency Clinic & Intensive Care Facility and Dr. Pierce at Veterinary Vision Center for all your help with my girl this week. Special thanks to Bennie’s longtime favorite pharmacist, Jude, for getting all her new meds filled at Mon Ami Pharmacy. Thanks for all the love and prayers. She felt them and now that she’s back to normal, she’s ready for all the tummy rubs and kisses.
