“A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” We had an amazing two days of assisting Dave and Linda Hershey with their Spring Mount Percheron hitch. Every once in a while, it does a mind and body good to be surrounded by people that share the same passion as you, all working toward the same goal of exhibiting these magnificent animals. I thank them, their granddaughter Mia, and Denise Wright for teaching and believing in us. —This video of the hitch heading to the ring is best described as “GO TIME!” Everyone always asks how long it takes to get them ready — typically takes about 2 1/2 hours to prep the 6 horses and then about 1 1/2 hours to unhitch, unharness, and clean harness.

Our new adventure we’re trying to add to our repertoire. tandem hitch — one horse directly in front of the other. Horses work best side-by-side, so this hitch is known for its trickiness. There is a set of lines for each horse to be controlled separately, and that front horse has a lot of freedom to roam. This is our first time, so we’re taking it slow at a walk and have helpers close by to ensure a positive experience for the horses, and so I can gain more confidence with the steering and handling.
