There is winter weather quickly approaching, and we want to remind you to think of all pets during this storm. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind! 🐱🌨️❄️🐶
CHECK VEHICLES
During cold weather, outdoor and stray animals often seek warmth in car engines or wheel wells. Before starting your car, give the hood a few firm taps and check underneath for any animals that may be hiding. Taking this simple precaution could save an animal’s life, and it prevents damage to your vehicle.
REGISTER & CHIP
Winter weather poses additional risks for pets that wander off or become lost. Snowy & icy conditions can cover up familiar scents, making it difficult for them to sniff their way back home. Your pet should wear a collar with up-to-date identification tags. Microchipping is another reliable & permanent form of ID to increase the chances of a safe return.
STAY CLEAN
Snow and ice aren’t the only things pets encounter outdoors in the winter. Many sidewalks and driveways are treated with de-icing chemicals that can irritate your pet’s paws or be harmful if ingested. After every outing, take a moment to thoroughly wipe down their paws, legs, and belly to keep them clean and safe.
PROVIDE SHELTER
Pets should always have access to warm shelter during cold weather. If possible, bring them indoors where it’s safe and cozy. For outdoor pets or strays, provide a well-insulated shelter with straw, which stays dry and provides warmth. Remember, hay absorbs moisture and is better suited for feeding horses, not for bedding animals.
