We're sorry for the excessive amount of mailers for Heartgard Plus and Nexgard that many of you have received. They were sent from the manufacturer and we are not sure why so many were mailed. We have the same offers in the clinic, so you do not need to save them or bring them with you.

Is the collar too loose/tight?

We strongly recommend bringing pets in with properly fitted collars. To make sure it's not too tight, you should be able to fit several fingers (2-4) under the collar while your dog is wearing it. If you can pull the collar off of your dog then it is too loose.

Unfortunately we do experience dogs slipping from their collars while coming into the clinic and we have to chase after them. Fortunately we haven't experienced this in a while. Please make sure collars are properly fitted!

To follow up our last post,
The two most common types of bladder stones show up well on x-rays. One is caused by a specific type of bacteria that can cause a UTI. So a dog that we treat for a UTI that is still showing symptoms may have started to form stones.
The other common stone is somewhat due to diet in the sense that some dogs form this stone unless on a specific diet. There is not a food that specifically causes these stones but it's more of an individual basis.
The University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine analyzes bladder stones for us for free and we can make diet changes based on the stone type.

Bladder stones can cause signs very similar to bladder infections (urinary tract infection/UTIs). This includes increased frequency of urinating, straining to urinate, peeing blood. There are several different types of stones that can form. The 2 most common show up very clearly on x-rays. This dog had 3 stones that we removed with surgery.

Rat poison can be a tasty treat for our canine family members. These poisons are made to be very appetizing and dogs are very adept at sniffing them out. Please if you do decide to use rat poison, make it impossible for your dog to get into the trap! This goes for storing it as well! The poison is just as potent to our dogs and can be devastating. Without quick intervention, it can be too late to treat them. If you think your pet has eaten rat poison please contact us immediately at 937-492-3422

Despite its name, ringworm is actually a specific fungal infection of the skin. It is not caused by a worm. Signs are circular areas of baldness that can grow. These patches are usually not itchy but will be scaly and flaky. This is a zoonotic disease which means humans can get it from our pets!

Pain in our pets is one of the more frustrating things to figure out. Sometimes it can be hard to know if they are experiencing pain. Obvious signs of pain (limping, vocalization, trembling) make diagnosing easy. There are different body language and facial features that can be seen with pain. Our pets can be very stoic and not show pain easily.

Sorry our phone lines are down today (Tuesday Sept 21). We are working on it. We are available for walk-ins 9-noon and 2-6, and there will be someone here for medication pick-up until 6:30. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The Vietnam Traveling Wall and motorcycle parade will be passing our clinic Wednesday evening, so access in and out will probably not be available at the end of the day. If you are planning on coming Wednesday afternoon/evening, the sooner the better (afternoon walk-ins start at 2:00), and you may want to be at the clinic by 5:00 if you want to be sure to get back out. If you're here, you're welcome to watch from our front yard!

Limb amputation

Sometimes we see patients that have conditions where we think amputation (removal) is going to be a better, shorter, or cheaper outcome. Fortunately animals do extremely well on 3 legs!

Some circumstances where we recommend amputation is a severe fracture that surgery to fix is not an option, fractures that won't heal, cancer, severe infections that we can't heal with antibiotics, or nerve damage to where there is no use.
