We get a very common training issue in the world of K9 handlers. Their dog is aggressive alert or comes out to run a vehicle and is looking for the decoy. They cannot get their K9 focused on detection. When asked for a video to assess.. they send about ten of the dog doing bitework and zero of the actual issue.

The K9 world is full of egos and sadly a lot of K9 units just want to train for the cool and flashy.

They have zero interest in doing tracking with their K9. Detection work comes second to their training for bitework.

As a handler nothing teaches you to read your dog like working it in detection and tracking.

Tracking will humble even the most seasoned trainer. You are forced to live in the present, the moment and read your dog.

A lot of handlers have zero interest in the tracking aspect. They leave the K9 academy and that is the last time they actually ran their K9 on a track.

If you have a dual purpose K9, make time for each discipline. It will make you a better handler & trainer. It will bring a very humbling aspect. Failure helps us grow.
