After catastrophic fires devastated the community of Lahaina, Sierra Vista Animal Control Officer Tammy Berry answered Maui’s call for help and deployed to the recovering island alongside peers from throughout the western U.S. Paired with Officer Lim with Mission Viejo Animal Control, Officer Berry patrolled Lahaina for one week gathering animals in hopes of reuniting them with their owners, caring for animals left behind, collecting the remains of those that didn’t make it, answering calls for service, and otherwise assisting Maui Humane Society.

The experience not only enabled Officer Berry to support colleagues, animals, and residents directly affected by the fires, it also gave her on-the-ground training in disaster response and preparedness. Officer Berry returned to Sierra Vista with skills and knowledge essential to emergency and disaster animal care planning and the ex*****on of those plans, should the community need them.

Thank you, Officer Berry, for your dedication to animal care both here in Sierra Vista and in areas affected by disaster!

If you’re interested in making a meaningful difference in the health and wellbeing of animals in our community, the City is hiring for a full-time Animal Control Officer and a part-time Kennel Tech. Learn more at https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/sierravista

This little guy was reported to have been hit by a vehicle this evening around 430pm near Greenbrier and Highway 92. Animal control officers searched the area but were unable to locate him. Later in the evening some good Samaritans located him and contacted Animal Control. He appears alert and stable and will see a veterinary first thing in the morning. Sadly he did not have a collar/ tags or a microchip. His owner should contact the shelter (520) 458-4151.

What is a dog's favorite game? Chase! And today is National Chase Day. You can almost feel the speed in this game of chase as we exercise the dogs at our care center.

Did you know that most dogs generally need 20 to 30 minutes of vigorous daily exercise? Or that tired dogs frequently behave better? What is your dog's favorite game? How do you exercise your pooch?

Earlier this week, Nancy J Brua Animal Care Center staff joined other animal control professionals from all over Arizona for a pet CPR class. Not only did they learn about pet CPR, but first aid as well. It is important that our staff are well rounded in all training to be assets to the community.

Staff and volunteers recently spent almost two full days of training with Dogs Playing for Life! They learned how to properly introduce dogs and safely allow groups of shelter dogs to play off-leash together. After incorporating this training at the shelter, staff decided to remove the "only child" sign from Frankie's kennel.

Frankie is a male heeler hound mix who is around two years old. Staff initially thought he would need to be an only dog, but after doing exceptionally in the playgroup, staff determined he would do well with others.

This is just one example of how continued training enables staff and volunteers to better support the animals and community they serve!

Several weeks ago, our animal control staff attended their annual recertification on baton training. This training helps protect officers from aggressive animals, particularly dogs, by integrating and honing baton skills that keep animals a safe distance away and prevent attacks by repurposing the baton as a bite stick.
