HAPPY HALLOWEEN from the Doctors and Staff of Chatham Veterinary Service - Reminder the treats and candies you get this evening are not ok for your pets!
Many types of candy are not safe for dogs and cats, including:
Chocolate
Theobromine and caffeine in chocolate can cause stomach upset, increased heart rate, seizures, or even coma. The most toxic chocolates are those with the highest level of cacao.
Raisins and grapes
Even a small amount of grapes or raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, dehydration, and seizures.
Candy corn
Contains high levels of sugar, food coloring chemicals, corn syrup, and marshmallow.
Hard candies and mints
Can be a choking hazard and can clump together in a dog's or cat's stomach, potentially obstructing their digestive system.
Sugar-free gum or candy
May contain xylitol, which can cause a severe drop in blood sugar within minutes in pets.
Candy with plastic or foil wrappers
Can cause an obstruction in the intestines and irritate the gastrointestinal tract.
Dairy-based treats
Many dogs and cats are lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy. Ingesting candy that contains dairy can cause an upset stomach, vomiting, and digestive issues such as diarrhea.
If you think your pet may have ingested candy, you should seek veterinary care immediately. You can call poison control or an emergency veterinary practice if you can't reach your vet right away.
