Keep your pups cool during this heat wave with some fun in the water! Some dogs really love kiddie pools to lounge in on hot days or maybe you'd like to take your dog to visit Sager Creek or City Lake to cool down!

It's hot out there folks and it is going to be that way for a while longer. Give a stray some water! We have a lot of stray cats and dogs in our area. They have more challenges than they need already. Please give them some love and some cool water today!

Fresh cold water is essential during hot times! We recommend bringing your pets inside if you have air conditioning but we are hearing reports of many folks without air conditioning. Please make sure your pets have easy access to cool, clean water at all times. If you see a pet outside without water, please offer them some and notify the owner. If you feel a pet is in danger, please report to Siloam Springs Code Enforcement so they can do a welfare check! You might safe a life!

Instead of bringing your dogs along for the ride, let's leave them at home in the air conditioning during these hot days! A few minutes in a hot car can cause heat stroke; yes, even with the windows cracked! If you see a pet in a car that you think is in distress, please call 911 right away for officer assistance. Be responsible and smart with your beloved pets. Please don't make a concerned citizens have to break out your car window to save your pet's life! Let's leave our pets at home, instead of bringing them along to do errands during this time, to keep them safe!

We are trying to keep dogs and cats safe during this heat wave all this week by increasing awareness. Pets outdoors are at extreme risk of heat stroke and death with our current temperatures. Please bring them inside to the air conditioning if at all possible. If that isn't possible, please make sure they have deep shade, good ventilation, and lots of cold water. Consider a doggy pool or a mister too! Older pets and those pets with heart conditions are at more risk as are brachycephalic breeds (short snout) which include French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Bullies, Pugs, Boxers, and Boston Terriers for example. Let's not forget the northern breeds like Huskies, Malamutes, and Akitas! They are not built to withstand high temperatures. Please help them stay cool inside!

All week long we will be focused on keeping pets safe during this heat wave! Please avoid taking your dogs for walks on the HOT concrete and asphalt. They have tough feet but not that tough! Burned pads are extremely painful! We are expecting temperatures well over 100F making asphalt surfaces more than 160F! Walk your dogs on grass and avoid the hottest hours of the day by instead chosing to go at dawn or dusk. If the outside temperature is above 87F, you can cause your dog's feet to be burned if you walk them on asphalt for even a short time!

We are seeing a LOT of Bob Cat Fever, aka Cytauxzoonosis, in our feline patients currently! This disease is spread by the bite of a Lone Star tick. It is preventable with the regular use of an appropriate prescription parasiticide. The one we carry is applied to the skin over the shoulder blades.

This disease is fatal in most instances! Please protect your kitties. Staying inside is the safest option, but remember your dog could bring ticks inside if not protected. The disease is not contagious to humans, thankfully, but many diseases carried by fleas and ticks are contagious to people so please protect your whole family by protecting your pets! Please call us if you have questions. We are happy to help.

Pictured below is the yellowed skin of an infected patient. Infected cats will often show this jaundiced (yellow) color to the skin of and around their ears, the whites of their eyes, and sometimes their gums. They will have high fevers and be lethargic with a poor appetite.

Luna is a beautiful member of the Donsky Cat family. We certainly don't see Donsky Cats, a hairless breed, very often so it was fun to meet her! She likes to stay bundled up when it is chilly out.
