Solidago Farm

Solidago Farm Solidago Farm is a veganic urban farm located in Silver Spring, MD. Established in 2014, Solidago Farm is a vegan urban farm located in Silver Spring, MD.

It was created to experiment with veganic and bio-intensive farming principles, to evaluate and adapt heirloom, open-pollinated (and occasionally hybrid) vegetables, fruits, and grains to our local clime, and to save veganic seed for fellow veganic farmers and gardeners. I will be focussing heavily on grains this year, trialling hulless barley, oats, and wheat, upland rice, and quinoa. This spring

, the farm will also be building an outdoor vermicompost and a 3-bin composting system to utilize on-farm nutrition and to reduce waste.

Is eating non food items 'normal' in adult dogs and cats?
I see a lot of pets in my behavior practice that chew and ingest non-food items - bedding, socks, rocks, stuffed toys ... although adolescent animals will often 'explore the work with their mouth' - adult dogs and cats that eat foreign objects (called Pica) have been shown to have chronic GI disease.
If your adult pet eats non - food items - see your veterinarian for a GI work-up!

Despite its potency, ajo fino manages to be subtle and elegant at the same time, according to Hernández. And as distinctive as it is, she sees ajo fino as more than just a flavorful ingredient. It’s a piece of the country’s culinary heritage.

“It’s part of Spain,” she says in the episode. “If we lose our identity, we lose everything.”

Miriam Hernández, head chef at the restaurant La Casa del Pregonero, is reviving a unique variety of garlic known as ajo fino. In an episode of “Eva Longoria: Searching For Spain,” she showcases its distinct flavor and its place in Spain’s culinary history.

📢 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀

Did you know that for the last several years, farmers, schools, and food distributors have been working together to serve fresh, local food in schools and food pantries across the nation?

Until a few weeks ago, the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (LFPA) and Local Food for Schools Program (LFS) at USDA were doing just that. Both programs were working to build stronger local supply chains and promote market access for smaller scale and historically underserved farmers and ranchers at the same time.

Despite the programs’ wide success with farmers and families, on Friday, March 7, the USDA announced the termination of over $1 billion in previously announced 2025 funding for LFPA and LFS. The loss of these investments will have lasting effects on local food networks. Farmers depend on these contracts, as many of them shifted their businesses to accommodate the new demand, and food banks and local schools will lose out on high quality local produce.

Your members of Congress have the power to create permanent versions of these programs that farmers and communities can depend on through the farm bill, but we need your help to build broad, bipartisan support!

Can you take a moment to email your legislators and ask them to support making LFPA and LFSCC funding permanent through the Farm Bill?

The U.K. Brachycephalic Working Group have declared that flat faced dogs who breathe with noise at rest or after light exercise are suffering with severe respiratory disease and should NEVER be considered normal or healthy.

They also say that these dogs should never be described as ‘healthy’ if they are promoted, bred from, sold, shown or rehomed.

Which is strong stuff, particularly considering this group includes breed clubs and rescue organisations.

These breeds are wonderful animals and companions, and they deserve equally wonderful, long and healthy lives but at the moment too many are suffering simply because of the way they look and how they have been bred.

The heartbreak this causes to their families and the veterinary profession should not be underestimated either.

If we want them to continue to exist, and we should, then we must demand that only healthy individuals are bred from and we move away from their extreme confirmation and are open to outcrossing.

And if they are given up to rescue, they do absolutely deserve to be found loving new homes but it is important to be realistic about their health challenges, the degree of care they need and their quality of life.

Long-term study finds organic farming leads to adaptations in the genetic material in plants

A 23-year study found that barley grown under organic farming conditions developed unique genetic adaptations, enhancing resilience to nutrient and water deficiencies. Unlike conventionally farmed barley, which became genetically uniform, organic barley maintained genetic diversity, aiding adaptation to environmental changes.

Growing a Wholesome Diet

Established in 2014, Solidago Farm is a veganic urban farm on bio-intensive farming principles, evaluating and adapting heirloom, open-pollinated (and occasionally hybrid) vegetables, fruits, and grains to our local clime, and to save veganic seed for fellow veganic farmers and gardeners.

The farm is named for our beautiful, prolific, and native goldenrods, Solidago means to “strengthen” or “make whole.”

My goal with Solidago Farm is to strengthen our local food offerings with a wholesome diet devoid of animal manure, blood meal, and fish meal and to promote biodiversity of wildlife, native plants, and crops. To that end, I am currently looking for a place to restart the farm and have the ability to scale up to a whole diet CSA and a veganic seed company. Please check Facebook for future updates about the farm.
