SUMMER LAWN CARE IN FLORIDA

Our Florida lawns have gone dormant from our recent summer heat and drought. Do not feed your lawn when it is hot and dry. Fertilizing is best done right after a rain while the soil is damp so it can soak into the root system. Do not fertilize if there is heavy rain and standing water. Wait until the ground processes the water before applying any fertilizer. We are fortunate to have the recent rain, but continue to monitor and make sure your lawn receives adequate moisture during the hot, dry periods. Of course, always follow any watering restrictions for your community.

Reduce stress on your lawn by minimizing foot traffic on it when it is hot and dry. Also be sure it is mowed with the mower set to one of its highest positions. Taller grass can grow deeper roots. Make sure the blade is sharp. Dull blades will lead to excess moisture loss.

A final note about preparing for hurricanes and large storms. These can bring high winds and heavy rain that can disrupt the growth of an otherwise healthy lawn. Be sure to prepare by anchoring gardens and plants with mulch or netting. This prevents loss of topsoil and allows plants to anchor deeper into the ground. Look for any trees that may need pruned to avoid branches snapping off and causing damage. Grass is more difficult to maintain during these storms. Make sure your gutters and downspouts drain away from the yard to. Prevent soil from being eroded.
