We knew Peaches and Chief were bonded, but these two insist on doing EVERYTHING together! How could we say no to double the pup cups!?

A groundbreaking leader in the world of Animal Behavior and for many of Kitsap Humane Society's animal professionals, Karen Pryor passed away on January 4th, 2025 at the age of 92. Starting her career in zoological facilities, Karen saw an opportunity to apply training techniques to our furry companions becoming a "pioneer" in force-free dog training and most famously known for the development of modern clicker training. She started Karen Pryor Clicker Training (KPCT), an organization that promoted companion animal training and positive reinforcement research and later established the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training & Behavior (KPA). Karen published multiple books, and her findings have gone on to be presented at seminars and conferences and to influence the foundations of other animal behavior organizations.

Outside of animal training and research, Karen was an advocate for positive reinforcement throughout areas of our own lives, extending her research into educational and parenting techniques. Her behavior studies are noted to influence how her followers build relationships and communicate with the world around them. Her work has spanned across shelters, zoos aquariums, and in our homes.

“Karen's impact on animal welfare is truly immeasurable,” said Chris Russell, KHS’ Community Resource and Behavior Manager. “I've been very fortunate to have been brought up in this field with her practices forming my foundations of animal behavior and training. She has had a tremendous impact on my career, and it brings me so much joy to honor her work in my everyday life.”

Karen’s passing is a huge loss in the field of animal training and welfare and she will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Please consider contributing to KHS in honor of Karen, where we ensure that her immeasurable impact will continue to live on in our work.

Help us continue to support those in need in our community - contribute to the KHS Pet Food Pantry!

Those in need of food or supplies for their pets are welcome to visit the Pet Food Pantry, located on the KHS campus, once per month. Dog and cat food are available seven days a week from 12 PM to 4 PM to residents of Kitsap and Mason County who are low-income. Our pet food pantry also supports animals while they are in foster care.

Please visit our website to learn more, and consider donating food to the pantry. Donations are accepted in front of our Admissions department during operating hours seven days a week!

Meet our sweet friend Berri, who recently has found it hard to sit still for the camera 😂

A 2-year-old black kitty with a cute *tiny* patch of white, Berri has become a big lover. She constantly wants pets and cuddles, but we don't complain one bit! Berri is a bit shy at first, but we know with the right family, she will feel right at home.

Double the dogs, double the love! Meet Peaches and Chief, a bonded pair of pups looking for their new home!

Peaches is an 8-year-old terrier mix who is bonded with her pal Chief, a 10-year-old shepherd mix, meaning the two must go home together. While the two may be entering their golden years, that has not stopped them from enjoying a busy, playful life! These two are excited and ready for any adventure that comes their way, and we know you will make the best of memories with Chief and Peaches by your side!

We LOVE hearing updates on our KHS alum, even many years later! Today, we're catching up with an army of former KHS residents; Biff the Chihuahua, Maggie and Oreo the kitties, and their rescue sibling Heidi!

Life is full of routine for this family, the cats wake everyone up at promptly 4:30 AM, with the dogs snoozing until about 7. These cuties all have their quirks; Biff and Heidi will enjoy their days cuddling, saying hi to neighbors (or the occasional rabbit) and playing neighborly dog friends. Maggie and Oreo love exploring, playing, and cuddling on their favorite couch pillows. Biff puts himself to bed promptly at 8:30 after giving his human brother goodnight kisses, to which Oreo will groom and cuddle with Biff and Mom at night. Maggie and Heidi are night owls with Dad until they all go to bed.

"Our pets have hugely impacted our lives," says their family. "When we had our son, we knew all of the animals would love him but we didn’t know the extent their love will go. They are all extremely patient with our high-energy toddler and have never harmed him. For that, among many other reasons, we are extremely grateful and blessed all of our rescue furbabies have come into our life!

Thank you Kitsap Humane Society for giving us the opportunity to provide our furbabies with a better life and for all that you do for all animals! We will always be thankful to KHS and the volunteers who work there!"

Over the last few weeks, we have seen a large uptick in our intake numbers. When we are nearing capacity, or simply overwhelmed with the population of animals coming into our care, we rely on community support and resources provided by other amazing organizations, ensuring we are doing the best for every animal.

We want to send huge gratification to our transfer partners Rise Rescue Alliance, Seattle Humane and Old Dog Haven for helping us save over a dozen dogs and puppies. With these partners, we have been able to ensure each pup is getting the best possible care, training, and love before finding their home. Thank you for helping these wonderful pups onto their next adventure. Animal Welfare Organizations coming together for the greater good is how we are able to make such an impact on our communities and the lives of incredible animals all over the area.

Barks and Rec is a day trip program for KHS shelter dogs to get a break from their kennel for a day, get out and experience new things, and making new human friends along the way. Not only is this program beneficial for enriching the lives of our shelter dogs, it also gives the shelter more information on how our pups do out and about so we can help better support them throughout their adoption journey!
